Kick off the school year with annual Orono Festival Day

ORONO As the summer draws to a close, the University will be coming back to life as upperclassmen return and freshman arrive. Orono aims to usher in the year right with the 36th annual Festival Day. The event promises to be grand and will spread throughout town from Mill Street to the University Steam Plant. It will run all day Saturday, Sept. 7.

A great many activities have been planned for the day. Activities will be set up at the Asa Adams school, Orono Public Library, Municipal parking lot, Mill Street and the Steam Plant. And there will be something for everyone. Games are provided for the kids, as well as a truck petting zoo with several heavy machines set up to be climbed on. Crafts for children and a celebrity reading tent will be set up.

Plenty of activities are planned for adults and students as well. War canoe races will be run anyone interested in just going out for a relaxing paddle can take out a canoe and yoga instruction. A series of bicycle and giant tricycle races will be conducted.

Up and down Mill Street, festival goers can browse wares and crafts and try a variety of foods. Many of the crafts are provided by local artists from Orono and the surrounding area, including many small businesses right in town. Local restaurants will be selling and providing food, including Thai Orchard. Festival goers can also participate in a chili cook-off, sample a variety of homemade chili and vote for their favorite.

Organizers of Festival Day are excited to celebrate the beginning of BikeMaine, the first major long distance endurance race to come to New England. The event is organized by the Maine Bicycle Coalition and runs from Sept. 7 to 14, covering more than 400 miles through four counties. To celebrate the event, the Black Bear Brewery will provide a special brew American Brown in honor of BikeMaine. Orono serves as the start and end for the event, and the riders will be in town to experience the rhythms and vibes of the town and University.
