BANGOR It's time to dig those Hawaiian shirts out of the closet and get ready for a party, because the Sun of a Beach Festival is making its way to the Bangor Waterfront. It's an event tailored to fans of the 'island attitude' popularized by music superstar Jimmy Buffett and aimed at bringing a little bit of the beach to Bangor.

The show, brought to the area by Darlings and Townsquare Media, is set to take place on Aug. 11. From 2:30 p.m. until 9 p.m., Bangor is going to play host to its very own version of Margaritaville. Three great bands will be taking the stage. Tickets are $15; gates open at 2 p.m.

The Atlantic Clarion Steel Band will be there; this Brooksville-based ensemble has been showing audiences the true potential of the steel pan since its founding in 1974. You'll also see the Calypso Cowboys, a Portland-based group that will perform that accentuate their own particular flavor of tropical rock.

And the headliners will be Changes in Latitudes, the nation's foremost Jimmy Buffett tribute act. This band rolls 10-strong to bring the music and attitude of Jimmy Buffett to life onstage. They've performed all over the country and are now set to bring their show to the Bangor Waterfront Pavilion.

Festivalgoers can also expect some great vendors, a wealth of food options and boat drinks as far as the eye can see.

Garth Ellms is one of the creators of Sun of a Beach.

'We started this festival about a year ago in upstate New York,' Ellms said. 'And it has been taking off in popularity ever since then!'

A lot needs to be invested to build a festival like this one, but Ellms and others recognized the obvious potential of assembling the event.

'We realize that people enjoy the [idea of the] vacation island lifestyle getaway even when they don't have the opportunity to get away,' said Ellms. 'So [with Sun of a Beach] we bring the beach, the music and a great atmosphere to them.

'Also - everyone loves a good Jimmy Buffett tune, and we have the best Jimmy Buffett tribute band in the country touring with us!'

The Sun of a Beach Festival has only been around for a short time, but it is already growing and evolving. What started out in a single location in upstate New York is rapidly becoming a much wider-ranging phenomenon.

'The event has evolved by adding more locations, more people and fine-tuning the experience to create a great atmosphere and opportunity for attendees,' Ellms said. 'We started this in upstate New York and now we are traveling with this festival concept to Buffalo, New Jersey, Louisiana, Texas and of course Bangor, Maine which we are very excited about!'

Ellms went on to add that the current plan is to continue adding new cities to the schedule, to the tune of anywhere from three to five new locales each year.

So what should we expect from Sunday's festival?

'Festivalgoers can expect a great time, a great atmosphere and to be surrounded by people that enjoy the same lifestyle as them,' said Ellms. 'This is achieved by packaging things like Changes in Latitudes - the nation's leading Jimmy Buffett tribute band - with great local talent. And of course, we include great food options and, not to be forgotten, boat drinks - beer, margaritas, rumrunners and other fun concoctions - dependent on the location!'

Who among us doesn't love the idea of a daylong party? That's exactly what the organizers of the Sun of a Beach Festival are offering. It's a chance to get out there and enjoy an afternoon and evening built around sun and sand, a figurative day at the beach rather than a literal one.

So whether you're a fan of Jimmy Buffett and the world of tropic rock or you're just looking for a chance to step away from your world and spend a few hours adopting an island attitude, the Sun of a Beach Festival is for you. Why not check it out?

And remember at Sun of a Beach, it's five o'clock all day.

Tickets to the Sun of a Beach Festival are available for purchase at Admission is $15; gates open at 2 p.m.
