After concert stages were silenced for more than a year by the pandemic, box-office management system TicketSource has released research data outlining the most frequently searched artists and tours by state for 2021. Nashville superstar Chris Stapleton dominated the list for Maine and 18 other states.

Rounding out the top five most searched artist tours of the year, according to the research, were pop icon Harry Styles, country singer-songwriter Morgan Wallen, superstar Eric Church and jam-band behemoth Phish.

Stapleton’s career has exploded in the six years since he released his solo debut LP “Traveller.” A five-time Grammy-winner and winner of seven Academy of Country Music Awards, and ten CMA Awards, Stapleton has co-written six number-one country hits, most of them for other artists.

Stapleton and his band brought their All-American Road Show tour to Bangor on July 25, 2019 in a sold-out show, with acts Margo Price and The Marcus King Band, promoted by Waterfront Concerts. Company founder and president Alex Gray says the data citing Stapleton as Maine’s most searched touring artist doesn’t come as a surprise.

“Chris was a superstar before he was a superstar, if that makes sense,” Gray said during an interview. “Country fans may or may not be aware that he has written so much of the music from the last 10 years. Chris and his team are just a great group of people.”

Gray says Stapleton’s appeal extends beyond just the country music audience.

“Chris has an Americana vibe and a classic rock vibe,” Gray said. “If you look at what I call heritage country, artists like Hank Williams Jr. have that same appeal to country and rock audiences.”

As for the other artists in the top five most searched tours as outlined by TicketSource’s research, Gray says the names and numbers add up.

“Harry Styles is a pop superstar, Morgan Wallen is a breakout country star and Eric Church is a legendary star,” Gray said.

Gray referenced Church’s career growth since the artist landed his first top-20 country hit 11 years ago.

“I think of where Eric’s career has gone since he was a support act for Miranda Lambert here in Bangor during our first season in 2010. He’s now playing stadiums like Chris Stapleton. He just played Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta with George Strait and probably sold 100,000 tickets which is just crazy.”

Phish’s 2021 tours were the most searched in five states according to TicketSource’s research which indicates that the jam-band kings had Maine’s fifth-most searched concert tour, making them the state’s most frequently searched rock band. Gray said he understands why.

“Phish and Maine obviously have a unique relationship because of the festivals they put on up at Loring Air Force base in Limestone,” Gray said.

When Phish performed two consecutive shows in Bangor for Waterfront Concerts in 2019, the company had an oversized commemorative sweatshirt made for the band, Gray said.

“It’s emblazoned with every concert date and location Phish has played so far in Maine with over 40 entries dating back to the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor in the 1980s,” he said.

In October, Waterfront Concerts announced Maine Savings Federal Credit Union as a new naming partner for the 16,000 seat Bangor waterfront concert venue formerly known as Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion.

Nicknamed The Maine Savings Amp, the venue is preparing to unveil a new chapter as site upgrades and improvements continue in preparation for the 2022 season. Gray said there is still much to accomplish.

“We need a nice, mild winter to make our deadlines but like everything else, we’ll get there,” Gray said.

Waterfront Concerts plans to begin announcing shows for next season very soon, Gray said.

“We have a bunch of announcements coming,” he said. “They’re big and I think they’re going to start being released on the day after Thanksgiving.”
