Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 17

I almost didn’t bother writing this.

With a 10-game deficit and two weeks left, I had to gamble with my picks last week. It did not go well. I went 9-7 for the week, which isn’t terrible. However, Stella went a remarkable 13-3 to add another four games to her lead.

And so, sitting an insurmountable 14 games behind, I almost didn’t bother. But instead, I thought I’d just muster up my picks and finish strong. I’m not worrying about her picks – I’m simply making mine. And yet, even with all that, we still differed on five games. It isn’t much; my best-case scenario is that I get all five and manage to claw my way back within single digits.

First up is Miami/Buffalo. I’m going with the home team here; the truth is that the Bills have been surprisingly not-terrible for much of the season. Still not sure if rookie QB Josh Allen is good, but he’s interesting – interesting enough to cause trouble for the Dolphins D. Stella has a hunch that Miami is going to break off a couple of big plays and squeak one out against the Bills. She also is pretty sure that this will be a garbage game that no one should watch. On that, we agree.

Next, I’m taking the Falcons on the road against Tampa Bay. It has been a lost season for Atlanta, but I think this team is going to want to finish strong. Matt Ryan will be throwing a bunch against this iffy Buccaneers secondary. Stella likes the Bucs at home; she expects that Tampa Bay – which will have a lot of folks whose future employment will be influenced by this game – will be making a real effort to win this one.

I like the Bears on the road against the Vikings despite the fact that they’ve got relatively little to play for this week. Still, even if this Chicago defense is running at 75 percent, it’s going to be tough for Minnesota to get anything going. However, the Vikings will certainly throw the kitchen sink out there in an effort to make the playoffs. Stella thinks that will be enough; she thinks this will be the moment where Kirk Cousins justifies his massive contract. She’s calling for Stefon Diggs to have a big game and for the Vikings to do just enough on defense to hold off Chicago.

I went with Baltimore at home over Cleveland. While there’s no disputing the recent feistiness of the Browns, the Ravens need to take care of business to maximize their postseason chances. I love what Lamar Jackson has done and this Baltimore D looks great. Stella digs the Browns, especially quarterback Baker Mayfield. She thinks that this Cleveland team wants to make a statement to close out the season; a road victory against a very good Baltimore squad could be that statement.

In the final game of the regular season – one with legitimate playoff ramifications – I’ve got Indianapolis pulling out a road win against Tennessee. I like what I’ve seen out of Andrew Luck and I think that they’re ready to get it done and head to the postseason. Stella’s got another one of her hunches; she thinks that the Titans are going to put together one of their better all-around performances and punch their own ticket to the playoffs.

And that’s that. Another season in the books. Check in next week to see how badly I wind up getting beaten. But hey – now we’re on to the playoffs, where my performance has proven considerably more robust than in the regular season.

Stella, as always, remains unconcerned.
