The members of up and coming UK indie pop-rock band Her’s, and their tour manager, were tragically killed outside of Phoenix, Arizona last week, while in transit to the group’s next show in Santa Ana, California.

According to the band’s label Heist or Hit, guitarist and vocalist Stephen Fitzpatrick, 24, and bassist and vocalist Audun Laadig, 25, were killed along with their tour manager, 37-year-old Trevor Englebrekston of Minneapolis, when their van was struck by a wrong-way driver on westbound I-10 in La Paz County, Arizona, shortly after 1:00 a.m. March 27.

Her’s had just released their full-length debut album – titled “Invitation to Her’s” – last August. The band had released an EP in 2017 titled “Songs of Her’s.”

In a statement, the band’s record label wrote “We’re all heartbroken. Their energy, vibrancy and talent came to define our label. The world was at their feet.”

According to the La Paz County Sheriff’s Department, they had just received word of a wrong-way driver operating a Nissan pickup and were in the process of responding to the call when the driver of that vehicle crashed into the band’s van. The driver of the pickup was also killed in the crash.

Fitzpatrick was a native of Barrow-in-Furness, England, while Laadig hailed from Norway. In interviews, the duo had spoken of how Liverpool had adopted them as two of their own.

The duo met and former Her’s as students at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, where they graduated with music degrees in 2016.

Nathalie Candel, the band’s tour manager for a series of UK dates in 2018, told The Guardian of the duo, “They were just so incredibly lovely and genuine and fun,” adding “I wished every band were like them. They always made people laugh, always joking, having banter and just really being positive.”

Her’s had 19 dates scheduled on their current US tour; many of them sold out in advance. In Austin, Texas, the band scheduled five appearances during the annual SXSW Conference and Festival.

On March 6, the band posted the following to social media: “We’re officially on US soil, and your American air is tasting delicious, crisp, with a hint of freedom.”

On March 25, the band’s final post read “It’s almost home time for the lads, US tour has gone swimmingly so far. Got a hot sunset date with the Grand Canyon tonight.”

On a personal note, I was very much looking forward to interviewing Stephen and Audun in the coming days for a profile story in The Maine Edge about their album and tour.

I had been tipped about the band and their music by their UK PR firm, Super Cat.

“Invitation to Her’s” is a wonderful record full of beautifully constructed dreamy pop. The songs have a way of lodging in your subconscious and reappearing when you least expect it. I highly recommend adding it your collection, not only for the quality of the music but as a tribute to the gifted young men who made it.
