EDITOR'S NOTE: This is a note to disclose that Christopher Burns is also a talented intern for The Maine Edge and provided this press release for publication.

ORONO Poetry is a living art. Every breath animates it and brings its soul to life with rhyme, meter, enjambment and all other forms of syntax. Anything as special as poetry is best shared with others.

On Thursday, Dec. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, is hosting the Open Mic Poetry Night at the Bear's Den Caf & Pub in the University of Maine's Memorial Union.

The event is open and free to all members of the university and surrounding community. All you need to do is bring a love of the written and spoken word.

While advertised as a poetry night, all other forms of creative expression are accepted, including fiction and non-fiction. For longer prose pieces, you should find an excerpt that is central to the piece and can be read in 10 minutes. Poetry readings are limited to four to five poems, or 10 minutes.

Original pieces are welcome.

Sign up begins at 6:45 p.m. Arriving early is encouraged so you can pick the best time slot. After 7 p.m. you can choose from the remaining time slots or go onto the reserve list.

Officers from Sigma Tau Delta will supply poetry collections and anthologies for you to choose from and browse through.

Come enjoy a relaxing evening with good literature, delicious food, your favorite coffee, tea, beer or wine, all in good company.
