Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra concert

BANGOR -The Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras, an education program of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, have been rehearsing for three months in preparation for their spring concert coming up onSaturday, April 9that Hampden Academy.

ORONO American classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 20, in Minsky Recital Hall at the University of Maine.

The Juilliard School graduate has played at correctional centers in Louisiana and Maryland and in 2014 she launched the 'Bachpacking' initiative, wherein she takes a digital piano provided by Yamaha to public school classrooms to give interactive performances.

The Grand screens The End of the Tour'

ELLSWORTH The Grand presents 'The End of the Tour' as the next film in its CineGrand series of the best recent movies, screening on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, March 23 at 1 p.m. 'The End of the Tour' is an intelligent road movie featuring an astonishing performance from Jason Segel, especially for those who only know him from his Judd Apatow ('Freaks and Geeks,' 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall') and kids' movie roles ('The Muppets,' 'Gulliver's Travels'). Ticket prices for CineGrand films are for general admission seating and are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and $5 for Grand members. Matinee movies tickets are $5 for everyone.

BELFAST Midcoast Actors' Studio is proud to open its fifth season with 'A Lie of the Mind,' by award-winning playwright Sam Shepard. The play will run March 4-13 in Belfast.

BAR HARBOR -- Maine musician Micah Blue Smaldone has been announced the opening act for James McMurtry on Feb. 27 at the 1932 Criterion Theatre.

'I really enjoy playing in Bar Harbor in the winter,' Smaldone says. 'I'm looking forward to coming back to the Criterion and am excited to have the opportunity to share the stage with James McMurtry.'

FARMINGTON The University of Maine at Farmington is proud to present non-fiction, environmental author Kathryn Miles as the next reader in its celebrated Visiting Writers Series. Miles will read from her work at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 11, in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center. The reading is free and open to the public and will be followed by a signing by the author.

According to author Janine DeBaise, Miles's non-fiction work is known for combining the scientific facts of a story with a good narrative that entertains while educating. Miles's 'Superstorm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy' (Dutton 2014), is the first complete, moment-by-moment account of the largest Atlantic storm system ever recorded. In this riveting account, she takes the reader inside the enormous storm and the people whose lives were forever changed.

Oscar loves CineGrand! 02-03-2016

ELLSWORTH The Grand announces the lineup for the return of Winter CineGrand a series of the best of the recent films, many of them nominated for this year's Academy and Golden Globe Awards. The films will be shown weekly with an evening screening on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee on the following Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the exception of the Grand's 'Teen CineGrand Movie Night' on Tuesday evening, Feb. 16 only. Ticket prices for evening movies and are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and $5 for Grand members. Wednesday matinees are $5. The line-up of titles for Winter CineGrand are:

Tuesday, Feb. 9/Wednesday, Feb. 10 'Mr. Holmes,' directed by Academy Award-winner Bill Condon. This acclaimed film takes place in 1947 and features an aging Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen). In his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes comes to rely upon his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son, Roger (Milo Parker), as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love before it's too late.
