Bangor Symphony Orchestra violinist Sascha Zaburdaeva, Lincoln educator and Bangor Band assistant conductor Trevor Marcho to share duties

BANGOR The Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras (BSYO), an education program of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra (BSO), has appointed Sascha Zaburdaeva and Trevor Marcho as interim conductors following the departure of conductor Gina Provenzano in June. Provenzano relocated to Michigan with her family.

'Sascha and Trevor emerged from the search process as the best candidates to carry out the BSYO's mission of providing students with high-quality ensemble experiences in an encouraging environment,' said BSO executive director Brian Hinrichs. 'They are both highly-regarded in our community for their work with young people and exceptional musicians on top of that.' Zaburdaeva will lead the BSYO's Prelude String Orchestra and Marcho will lead the Prelude Wind Ensemble, both typically for students from ages 11 to 13. Marcho will also lead the Philharmonic Orchestra for advanced students, typically from ages 14 to 18. Both conductors will work closely with BSO music director and conductor Lucas Richman to develop the BSYO's programs and educational goals for the coming season.

Born in Moscow, Sascha Zaburdaeva attended Gnessin's Music College and performed with the Russian Youth Symphony and Youth Talents of Moscow. She continued her studies in New York at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Masao Kawasaki and Itzhak Perlman. After receiving her second bachelor's degree, Sascha earned a master's degree in violin performance with Anatole Wieck at the University of Maine, Orono. Zaburdaeva has rich experience as a soloist and chamber musician, and she currently sits in the first violin section of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra while teaching students of all ages and abilities at RDL Strings in Bangor. In recent seasons, she has been a string coach for the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras.

Trevor Marcho is currently the instrumental music teacher at the Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, ME and serves as the assistant conductor of the Bangor Band. A trombonist by training, from 2001 to 2006 he performed as a soloist with the U.S. Navy Fleet Forces Command Band in Norfolk, VA. Trevor recently completed his master's degree in instrumental conducting at the University of Maine, Orono, where he previously earned his bachelor of music degree in music education. From 2006 to 2010, he served as the sports band director at Brewer High School, and since 2006 he has been a low brass instructor at the Maine Summer Youth Music camp.

Auditions for the BSYO's 2013-14 season will take place on Sept. 22, 2013. Application materials will be posted online in early August.
