ELLSWORTH - The Live in HD high-definition simulcast series of productions from The New York Metropolitan Opera continues its 2015 2016 season at The Grand on Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. with a presentation of Georges Bizet's gorgeous opera of lust and longing 'Les Pcheurs de Perles' (The Pearl Fishers). The opera stars German soprano Diana Damrau, Lela, the beautiful Hindu priestess in this production directed by Penny Woolcock ('Doctor Atomic'). Tickets are $27 for adults, $25 for Grand members and $20 for students (15 and under).

The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera's award-winning series of live transmissions offering a significant portion of the Met season to DownEast and MidCoast Maine communities, continues its 10th season with the first production of Bizet's youthful classic on the Met stage in 100 years. Set in a mythical Far East by the composer and his collaborator Michel Carr, 'Les Pcheurs de Perles' remains within the conventional standards of the day, with a love triangle complicated by the true friendship of the two men involved in it. Although not performed frequently, the opera successfully stands on its own when appreciated for its unique atmosphere, rather than compared to Bizet's later masterpiece, 'Carmen,' or held up to modern notions of dramatic plausibility. Now Damrau is ably supported by her 'suitors'- American lyric tenor Matthew Polenzani and Polish operatic baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet 'Au fond du temple saint,' which opera fans know and adore. Woolcock's production team includes Costume Designer Kevin Pollard, Lighting Designer Jen Schriever and Set Designer Dick Bird, with movement directed by Andrew Dawson. Italian maestro Gianandrea Noseda conducts.

The Met: Live in HD series is made possible by a generous grant from its founding sponsor, The Neubauer Family Foundation. Global corporate sponsorship of The Met: Live in HD is provided by Bloomberg. Transmission of The Met: Live in HD in Canada is made possible thanks to the generosity of Jacqueline Desmarais, in memory of Paul G. Desmarais Sr. The HD broadcasts are supported by Toll Brothers, America's luxury home builder.
