Call for artists Call for artists

HALLOWELL -- The Harlow Gallery in Hallowell has issued an open call for exhibition proposals for the 2014 exhibition season. The gallery has recently switched to a simplified paperless email submission process. Maine artists and arts organizations are encouraged to submit ideas for exhibitions in 2014. The deadline for submission is Oct. 1, 2013. The Harlow Gallery is a 501(c)3 membership based non-profit gallery founded 1963 at 160 Water Street in downtown historic Hallowell.

Maine artists or artists with a strong Maine connection are the primary focus, but proposals from outside the state will be considered. Please note there is no budget for travel or art shipping costs, and artists 'from away' would need to take full responsibility for transporting their work to and from Maine.

Proposed exhibitions may be solo, group or themed-open, invitational or juried. Solo shows are generally limited to one per year, therefore submissions for small group shows are encouraged, or themed shows open to submissions from other artists.

The exhibition committee is especially interested in presenting art by promising or under-appreciated Maine artists; art from a range of disciplines; contemporary or conceptual art; or shows that address a current social issue - recent examples include art dealing with issues of domestic violence, mental illness, hunger, global warming and our society's love affair with the automobile.

The Harlow Gallery looks for creative ideas for ways to collaborate with other central Maine organizations and nonprofits and welcomes the potential to cross-pollinate ideas and appeal to new audiences. Recent partners include SpinOff Studios, Kennebec Land Trust, University of Maine at Augusta, Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Johnson Hall, Kennebec Local Food Initiative and area elementary, middle and high schools.
