Fourth annual Comedy Riot to feature four funnymen

BREWER It's that time of year again. The Comedy Riot is making its triumphant return to Brewer.

The fourth annual Comedy Riot is set to take place at Jeff's Catering in Brewer on Dec. 1 starting at 8 p.m. Tickets for this show, featuring four exceptional stand-up comedians, are available for $12 in advance or $15 at the door. The event will be emceed by educator and radio personality Rich Kimball, who has done his own fair share of comedy as a founding member of local improv collective The Focus Group.

This year's bill of fare is as strong as ever. Featured comedians include Adam Hatch and Cory Guglietti, along with two of the most sought-after comic headliners currently working on the East Coast. Ryan Waning is a favorite at some of the most important clubs in the industry and is in the midst of planning a spring tour of over two dozen college campuses. Brian Beaudoin is one of comedy's rising stars; he's performed at clubs all over the country and has been named Rhode Island's funniest comic two out of the last three years by the Providence Phoenix.

Waning took a little time to talk with The Maine Edge about the upcoming Riot and some of the pros and cons of working as a stand-up comedian here in the state.

When asked about his involvement with the Comedy Riot, Waning replied, 'The Comedy Riot had been chugging along just fine without me over the last four years, but some re-structuring gave me the opportunity to lend Adam a hand with promotions and other things I enjoy, and here we are. It has been a rewarding partnership.'

'Bangor is a great city and [this area] can certainly support more events like this one,' he added, 'whether we are talking about stand-up comedy or local theater or music. The onus lies with the performers. I think that if you offer a good product, something that you put yourself into, the people of Bangor will support it.'

Waning was effusive with his praise for the comics with whom he will be sharing the stage.

'As far as comedy shows go in the northeastern region of the country, this one is stacked from top to bottom,' said Waning. 'Brian Beaudoin is one of the most popular headliners on the East Coast and was named the Providence Phoenix's Funniest Comedian two out of the last three years. Cory Guglietti is a favorite at COMIX at Foxwoods and has one of the most distinct points of view in the business. Adam Hatch is a Maine comic who has found his niche and has been lighting up audiences of late, and Rich Kimball is a radio and broadcasting legend.

'Add all of that to the biting, sarcastic, tough love that is my stand-up comedy and you can pencil money well spent' onto your calendar for Dec. 1.'

Put it all together and it looks like there will be some serious laughs to be had at Jeff's Catering on Dec. 1. The previous three Comedy Riots have been great fun for local audiences there's no reason to expect anything less from number four.

Tickets for Comedy Riot IV can be purchased in advance by calling the Jeff's Catering box office at 989-1811.
