Tantrum will open at 193 Broad Street in a second-floor space that was most recently home to L'Aperitif European Tapas Lounge. Steve Parlee, who along with his wife has owned and operated downtown establishments Ipanema Bar and Grill and Reverend Noble Pub for the past three years, will be one of the people running the show.

'The goal is to bring a big-city level nightclub to Bangor,' said Parlee. 'We want to offer the full service, to do food we're [also] looking to create a lounge atmosphere and have a level of nightlife that really hasn't been done around here before. Upscale but accessible.

'One of the things that I think will set us apart is that we're kicking it up a level, nightclub-wise,' he added. 'We're going to have a comfortable, quiet lounge where you can relax right alongside the space to dance.'

When the dust clears from the heavy renovation being done to the space, Tantrum will include a large dance floor and function rooms to go along with the lounge and bar areas. In addition, the space includes a large deck that will eventually become one of the biggest outdoor drinking/dining areas in town.

'We're going to have the space to highlight local DJs and musicians, but we'll also have the capacity to bring in regional talent as well,' Parlee said. '[It'll be] somewhere between Geno's and Rock City in Portland.'

Tantrum is an idea that was born some time ago, according to Parlee, but it was in late August when a pair of ladies from Brewer Elizabeth Barry and fellow partner Michelle Fern made the investment to go ahead with it and tapped Parlee to run it.

'I've had my eye on this space for a long time,' he said. 'This location is awesome; you're right between downtown and the waterfront. It's a perfect spot it just needed to find the right use for it. It has the size and capacity I wanted when it came open, it was kind of a no-brainer.'

While the club isn't quite ready to open its doors, it's just a matter of time. Right now, it's about the little things.

'We're close,' said Parlee. 'We'll open within a few weeks. At this point, it's all about the details [things like] having the inspectors come through, check everything out. We're not done, but the waiting is over.'

Bangor is a place to be these days. The social scene is blossoming. Tantrum will offer downtown's denizens a little something different. Whether you're looking for a quiet drink with friends or a raucous night out, Tantrum aims to please.
