BANGOR - The city of Bangor is all aglow over the start of the winter season. This past weekend, over 20,000 white lights that don the trees along the downtown corridor, West Market Square and Kenduskeag Parkway were turned on, illuminating the area and people's spirits as winter approaches.

"It's daylight savings and as the nights get longer and darker, we'll be lighting up downtown so folks won't feel those winter doldrums so bad," explained Caitlin Brooke, a coordinator for Downtown Bangor Partnership.

Last year's Kenduskeag Park lighting was so well received that the Downtown Bangor Partnership, which is dedicated to promoting, marketing and enhancing commercial, residential and cultural life in downtown Bangor, expanded upon this year's light display.

"They're winter lights that'll stay up throughout January, February and March," said Brooke. "We want it to be more of a winter wonderland ambiance [in the area] instead of it being associated with a holiday. That's why we're starting it so early."

And while the Downtown Bangor Partnership team's focus is brightening up Bangor throughout the winter months, the group took a moment during Saturday night's lighting ceremony to honor Public Works employee Marcia McGrath for keeping the area blooming with color throughout the summer.

"I was very surprised. I mostly just kept the flowers watered with help from my supervisor and other people in forestry. I didn't expect anything like this," said McGrath. "I just love the flowers and how it makes Bangor look so much better in the summer and now with the lights it's just so beautiful down here."
