Bangor Ballet's artistic director steps down after 22 years

BANGOR -Bangor Ballet's Board of Directors has announced that Ivy Clear-Forrest will retire as Artistic Director following this month's performances ofThe Sleeping Beauty, to be performedApril 9 at 7 pmat the Bucksport Performing Arts Center andApril 10 at 4 pmat the Gracie Theatre in Bangor.

Ms. Forrest began her professional career at New York City Ballet under the legendary George Balanchine and was a Principal Dancer with the Joffrey Ballet under founder Robert Joffrey. Ms. Forrest has served as Bangor Ballet's Artistic Director and principal choreographer since the company's founding in 1994. Although stepping down as Artistic Director, Ms. Forrest will continue to coach members of the company, many of whom have been accepted into some of the most prestigious summer training programs in the nation and she will continue to teach classical ballet at Thomas School of Dance, the company's official training school.

A master teacher, Ms. Forrest has provided opportunities for local dancers to perform in some of the great classics of the 19th century, includingSwan Lake,Les SylphidesandCoppelia.The Sleeping Beauty, her final production as Artistic Director, features both traditional and original choreography, and she leaves the company with a dazzling new addition to its repertoire. In addition to staging the classics, Ms. Forrest has choreographed original ballets for Bangor Ballet, including Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, New York Concerto, Porgy and Bess Suite,Salute to the Troopsand other shorter works. In 2012 she stagedThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow,which featured original choreography by Nell Shipman of Portland Ballet and live music by members of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Forrest's delightfulNutcracker in a Nutshellentered the repertoire in 2013 and has quickly become a holiday favorite.

Although stepping down from her position as Artistic Director, Ms. Forrest will contribute a piece of Balanchine-inspired choreography to the final production of Bangor Ballet's 2015-2016 season onJune 4 and 5.
