BANGOR - Five years ago, a small family-run business decided to open a unique gift shop on Central Street in Downtown Bangor. The six family members and many friends worked tirelessly to transform what once was Lippincott Books into The Rock & Art Shop and Sohns Gallery.

Through art receptions, poetry readings, a natural history freak show and providing a noteworthy shopping experience for tourists and locals alike, The Rock & Art Shop has helped to contribute to the renaissance of Downtown Bangor.

Its owners have helped to shape the town by working to light the trees in the Norumbega Parkway, helping to develop the Adopt-a-Garden program and painting the Greetings from Bangor Maine Mural to welcome visitors to the town. The shop has used 50% of the proceeds from the sales of mural merchandise, which includes a coffee mug, t-shirts and postcards to plant a small apple orchard along the Kenduskeag stream trail and a magnolia tree in Norumbega Parkway.

As for the big news, The Rock & Art Shop announced that they have recently purchased the building at 36 Central Street their Bangor location for the last five years - and renovations have started to transform the two top floors into apartments.

The Rock & Art Shop will be celebrating five years open in Downtown Bangor onSaturday, June 25thwith light refreshments and a raffle featuring pieces of a large petrified wood slice from Madagascar; the wood is approximately 225 million years old.
