The Marketing Edge – Giving your website a spring cleaning

With the advent of spring comes the urge to spruce up, tidy, and fix things within your business that may have been neglected throughout the cold winter. You may already be working away at the interior of your store or meeting with employees about fixing up internal processes to make things run smoother. Your website could also benefit from a nice once-over to ensure everything is running properly within your digital storefront.

Here are some tips to give your website a spring cleaning:

  1.     Change passwords. You should change your passwords at least once per year, and spring is a great time to do so. When you do change your passwords, make sure they’re a collection of at least 8 alphanumeric characters that can’t be easily guessed. This will ensure the security of your site as we move into a new season.
  2.     Update plugins. Plugins (or extensions, depending on the content management system you use) will oftentimes require regular updates to function properly. Check out your plugins and give them an update if necessary. You should also put a note in your calendar to check if they need to be updated every month to make sure your website runs properly.
  3.     Create a backup. If anything goes wrong and your website is compromised, you’ll be thankful you have a backup of the version with your most recent updates saved somewhere safe. Make a backup before and after you’ve updated plugins or extensions just in case something breaks with the updates.
  4.     Delete unnecessary plugins, pages, and users. These things are simply taking up space. If they don’t serve a purpose, get rid of them. It will help you navigate the backend of your site much easier and will ensure you’re not using more space than necessary.
  5.     Refresh your content and update photos. Take some time out of your day to read through the content on your website. If you haven’t refreshed it in a while, there may be things that should be updated, or details that you think you should add. You should also review your SEO to make sure the keywords you used are still relevant. A nice final touch would be to update your site’s photos to easily give it a new look. Make sure you compress the new images by using a service such as and give each photo alt tags for SEO purposes.
