Steller obtained his bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Maine in 1988 and completed a master of science in nursing at Husson University in 2007. He is a board certified adult psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMH-NP) with 33 years of experience including twenty one years at Acadia Hospital in positions of increasing responsibility. Steller is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and has been a frequent speaker and presenter on a variety of mental health issues.

Steller served in the United States Navy from 1976 to 1980 and the United States Army Reserve from 1980 to 1982. He lives in Hermon with his wife, Laura, and two dogs, Sid and Morgan.
