Farmington Designated Certified Business-Friendly'

AUGUSTA - Governor Paul R. LePage and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) announce that the Town of Farmington in Franklin County has been designated "Certified Business-Friendly." With the addition of Farmington, a total of 31 Maine communities have been "Certified Business-Friendly" since 2012.

"The Town of Farmington is one of many communities across our great state leading by example," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "These business-friendly communities are partnering with the private sector and achieving business excellence through streamlined regulations and permitting processes."

Chancellor plans USM presidential selection in March

PORTLAND The USM Presidential Search Committee completed its work this week, providing University of Maine System Chancellor James Page with the names and assessments of two finalists for his consideration: Glenn Cummings and Harvey Kesselman. A third finalist who took part in campus visits earlier this month, Zito Sartarelli, withdrew from consideration prior to the meeting at which the search committee developed its assessments.

The Presidential Search Committee conducted a national search, identifying Dr. Cummings and Dr. Kesselman as finalists from a pool of 80 candidates who responded to direct solicitations and national advertising.

PechaKucha MDI event will focus on community

BAR HARBOR The Abbe Museum, Breaking Even Communications and Northeast Harbor Library are proud to present PechaKucha MDI (PKMDI) Night on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Reel Pizza Cinerama. The event features a series of presentations focused on community, each consisting of 20 slides shown for 20 seconds each, totaling a talking time of six minutes and 40 seconds. The goal is to bring prominent and up-and-coming creative minds together for a night of inspiration, networking and fun. The event is free and open to the public.

"PechaKucha events are great," said Nicole Ouellette, one of PKMDI's organizers and one of the speakers at the March event. "It's kind of like picking up a magazine and reading an unexpected article you would never have read otherwise. Only with PKMDI, that unexpected but interesting information is coming as a presentation from someone you know in the community. There really is something for everyone at each event."

BANGOR - Geaghan Bros. Brewing Co. has partnered with the Maine Brewers' Guild to host the first Beer School session in the Greater Bangor Region.

The Maine Brewer's Guild is partnering with its member breweries and allied members to launch a series of interactive, engaging classes to take place all around Maine in 2015 and beyond that will promote Maine's world-class craft beer industry to the public, while raising funds for the organization. Part educational, part fun, the events will offer a variety of interactive, small format events that are designed to give craft beer enthusiasts the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at different aspects of the craft beer industry.

Leadership institute to offer Husson MBA credit

BANGOR - The Bangor Region Leadership Institute (BRLI) and Husson University have announced that BRLI participants may earn graduate credits through Husson University's College of Business. This option is available to all current and future BRLI students, as well as members of the two previous classes (2012-2013 and 2013-2014).

"As a result of Husson employees taking part in the Bangor Regional Leadership Institute and review of the curriculum, we became aware of the depth and breadth of the program offered to participants," said Marie Hansen, dean of the College of Business at Husson University. "BRLI goals and outcomes align with the programming found in the College of Business at Husson University. Through this new relationship with BRLI, participants can demonstrate their learning by working with our director of graduate programs, Stephanie Shayne, to earn credit for their efforts in this year-long program. We hope to see many BRLI participants take advantage of this opportunity to attain credit toward higher education degrees, such as an MBA, and seek further advancement in their careers."

UMaine Career Fair postponed until Feb. 11

ORONO Due to the snowstorm, the University of Maine Career Center has postponed its 17th annual UMaine Career Fair.

The fair, which was previously scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28, is now scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Balance Student Recreation Center. All previous employer registrations will be honored.

AUBURN McDonald's is now randomly accepting Lovin' as a form of currency. Following the launch of McDonald's 'Pay with Lovin'' Super Bowl commercial, the company is bringing the idea to life at participating restaurants across the U.S.

Customers who enter participating McDonald's restaurants across Maine and New Hampshire at randomized, predetermined times between Monday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 14 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time each day will be selected at random to participate. Once a selected customer has completed his or her order and presented a method of payment, the restaurant guest service manager or Lovin' lead will explain that McDonald's is doing something special that day, and the customer will be given the option to pay for his or her order with an act of Lovin' instead. For instance, breakfast might cost a friendly fist bump to the crewmember on duty, lunch could be paid for with a call to a loved one and dinner could go for a compliment.

EMDC workshop will showcase resources for start ups

BANGOR Thinking about starting a business but don't know where to begin? Eastern Maine Development Corporation will host a panel of experts on Thursday, March 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for It's Who You Know: Entrepreneurship 101. The free session will be held at the Bangor Savings Bank Eames Center on Maine Avenue in Bangor.

The discussion will introduce the people, organizations and other resources necessary to turn an idea into a business. Organizations on the panel include Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community, Penquis/MaineStream, SCORE and Small Business Development Centers (SBDC).
