Three students in Eastern Maine awarded with college scholarships

BANGOR Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway, Bangor, has initiated a scholarship fund to benefit children and grandchildren of Hollywood Casino employees. The Hollywood Casino Scholarship Fund was established this year, and awarded three $1,000 scholarships to local students moving on to higher education.

'We have had a program in place for quite some time that encourages our employees to take advantage of higher education opportunities,' said Jose Flores, general manager, Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway. 'We are happy to extend some of those benefits to the children and grandchildren of our employees. Education is such a priority in today's working world, and we want to help make the dream of higher education a reality for the families of our hard working staff.'

The three recipients of the scholarships are Kylie Cunningham, Megan Hunt, and Julie Stroba. Cunningham attended Bangor High School and is moving on to the University of Maine at Farmington majoring in Psychology. Hunt attended Ellsworth High School and will be attending the Rochester Institute of Technology in the school's Physician Assistant program. Stroba graduated from Bangor High School and will be attending the University of Maine in Orono to major in Engineering. All three students received $1,000 scholarships.

In addition to the scholarships, Hollywood Casino employees collected and donated school supplies and backpacks through the casino's 'We've Got Your Back' school supply drive. All supplies were donated to Penquis for area children in need. In total, about $2,500 in supplies were donated, which will benefit at least 100 area children in grades K-12.

'One of the most difficult things to do is to ask for help for your family,' said Flores. 'Penquis provides such a valuable service with their school supply program that makes asking for help just a little bit easier. But in order to provide that service, they need the proper amount of school supplies to meet the need of area families. Our employees really came together to make this happen and every single person felt very good about giving back to kids and families in this community.'

Hollywood Casino employees often get involved in events to benefit charities in the Greater Bangor Area. On top of sponsoring certain events, Hollywood employees have formed teams to participate in events such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and Champion the Cure.

'We all try to be good neighbors,' said Flores. 'It's just the right thing to do.'
