Levant Corner Store needs public votes to win

LEVANT - Two small Maine businesses are anxiously awaiting to see if wishes do come true. The owners of the Levant Corner Store and My Happy Pace in Old Town are competing to win a $5,000 grant from Intuit's Love Our Local Business Challenge, but they need the community's help to pull it off.

"Intuit is offering up 15 $5,000 grants to small businesses. We stumbled upon it [the challenge] on Facebook," said Jamie Clark, owner of the Levant Corner Store. "They're granting wishes. They asked you to submit your wish, and they're basing the results on how many people vote for the business and what type of effect the grant would have on local business in the area."

Clark's wish is to renovate the small restaurant area located inside the store that seats up to 40 people, while the owners of My Happy Pace want to use the grant money to increase their marketing to encourage others to be active.

"The red booths, red chairs and decor has been here since we purchased it four years ago. It's not really with the times or eye appealing," explained Clark. "And we'd need to construct a wall separating the store area from the restaurant area. We figured the renovation, the addition of the wall, new tables, chairs and serving ware would obviously be more than $5,000 but it would put a big dent into the cost."

The public can vote once a day, every day until May 12 by going to and typing in Levant Corner Store or My Happy Pace in the search bar then clicking on the 'vote for us' icon.

"You can vote on multiple devices," said Clark. "You can vote on your phone, your iPad and your computer [each day]. We keep going back and forth between ninth and 12th place out of 2,000 entries."

The 15 businesses with the most votes will win a $5,000, grant while the top five businesses with the most votes will also receive an Intuit product prize pack valued at $400.

"We've had a lot of positive feedback from the community," said Clark. "There's nothing really around. We're eight to 10 miles from Bangor. Gas is expensive, so it'd be nice to have something local with a Pat's Pizza feeling, where you can sit down, have a beer and pizza with the family on a Thursday or Friday night and not have to travel all the way into town."
