When cupid strikes

We've all heard the saying, 'Cupid will strike when you're not looking.' I'm not entirely sure that's true although it all remains very much a mystery to me. What I do know is that inspiration often strikes when we least expect it. I discovered this recently as I was working on a new design for my jewelry business. I've been struggling with an idea for months. I had a design idea in my head, but the process of bringing it to life just seemed to miss the mark for one reason or another. Design is much like love it can't be forced. It's either right or it isn't. So it's been many months of trying then failing repeatedly. This has left me with scores of materials that will be tossed out and many hours of time invested.

How did I know my design attempts weren't quite right? They didn't look or feel right, and the process to create them was far more time consuming, tedious and costly than I wanted. Let's just say I was in a relationship with my design, and it was complicated. Then it occurred to me that maybe I was trying too hard. Maybe I needed to just step back and give myself and my design attempts a little breathing room and space. Maybe I needed to stop thinking about it so much.

So I set the entire idea aside and worked on other aspects of my business. Then one morning out of the blue 'Cupid' struck! 'Design Cupid' is much like love Cupid striking at the least opportune times. I had plans that morning plans that I ended up being late for, because once that idea came to me, I had no choice but to sit down and make it come to life. When it did, it was magical. All the pieces fit. It's exactly what I was looking for. It looks great, fits beautifully and it's something that I enjoy spending time creating. I floated it by a few friends and wore it out and about. I call that taking it for a test drive. The positive feedback confirmed my instincts. I had finally found it my design soul mate!

So whether you're trying to design a new creation, seeking a new idea for your business or looking for love, let yourself try and let yourself fail. Then do it again and again. That process is a necessary one that will eventually lead you to discover that perfect fit. You never know when that discovery will be made, but when you know, you just know. It reminds me of a line from one of my favorite movies, 'When Harry Met Sally.' There was a scene in the film when a couple who had been married for many years was discussing how their relationship began. The husband reflected on introducing himself for the first time and his wife said, 'At that moment I knew. I knew the way you know about a good melon.'

Don't give up on your idea, your business dreams or your relationships for that matter. Keep yourself open and keep trying. One day when you least expect it - your very own 'Cupid' will arrive and deliver you a perfect melon!
