I dos and I don'ts!

I and my team from the salon participated in the Bangor Bridal Show last weekend at the Spectacular Event Center. We did hair and makeup for about 30 models who participated in two separate runway shows, one on Saturday night featuring dresses from Dream Dress Bridal and one on Sunday featuring dresses from The Henry's Bridal boutique. We had a lot of fun doing the hair and makeup, especially since we had complete creative control over the looks. We chose to show classic wedding hair based on three hairstyles: the classic vintage wave in long hair left down, the top bun (think Audrey Hepburn) and the low romantic chignon. All hairstyles are really based on these three looks, and a bride can never go wrong choosing one of these for her big day.

I gave a talk prior to the start of each runway show where I discussed classic hairstyles and my own list of 'dos and don'ts' of wedding hair and makeup. For most, the dress is the most important thing when planning a wedding. It is the first thing you think about. I am here to tell you that your hair and makeup need to be #2.

Feeling dry?

The winter chill is upon us and who knows how long it is going to stay. With the bitter cold and snow-covered ground comes the dry air. These are the days when I long for the high humidity of late summer. Everything right now is beyond dried out, and our hair and skin is right up there with the rest of things lacking any moisture right now. It is important to take extra special care of your skin and your hair this time of year. Let me offer you a few tricks on how to stay moisturized for the rest of the winter.

I have to switch up my hair and skin care routine for the winter, and you should too. This time of year you need to add moisture by switching up to a heavier face cream for your face and a conditioner with a little extra moisture is a must. Some of you may not use conditioner normally, and I would suggest that you do for the winter months. Hair that dries out is going to become brittle and frizzy and without proper care it is going to start breaking off. The only solution once your hair splits or breaks is to cut it off. There is no miracle product out there that can fix it.

Pinching pennies

It's always exciting to welcome in another year, to reflect upon the past and look forward to the future. But a new year can also bring stress - the stress of money being tight after all we spent on Christmas, entertainment, house emergencies (that always happen around the holidays) and heating costs. Then we all sit around stressing out about how we are going to pay for it and where we have to budget and cut things out for a while. I am right there along with all of you. But there is one place you don't have to cut entirely - nor should you - and that is your hair.

Your hair makes a difference in how you approach your daily life. I see it every day behind the chair. It is the reason I love my job so much. Something that can be so simple to me can make a huge difference in someone's life and how they feel about themselves. Your hair is your public business card to the world, and you should keep it looking its best at all times.

What do you expect?

Are you or someone you know expecting? It is such an exciting time in life. There is so much to think about and worry about while pregnant, and there is one question I get as soon as a client finds out that they are pregnant: 'Can I color my hair while pregnant?'

As a hairdresser, I am certainly a fill in therapist once in a while, but I am not a doctor. I always tell my clients that they should always consult with their doctor on this issue. Many recommend avoiding just about everything the first trimester. I believe coloring your hair during pregnancy is safe and that your hair can look great during your pregnancy. But remember, this is my opinion alone.

Party Hair 2013

The holidays are here, and that means parties, parties, parties! I get questions all the time on ways to style hair at home for that upcoming party. I think that this is a great excuse to make time for you. Give yourself a treat and make an appointment with your stylist to have your hair and makeup done for the party. In some situations, however, this may not be possible, so if you have to do it yourself, here are a few tips.

The key to success is to keep it simple. Don't try to make it perfect, and don't try to fight what it is your hair really wants to do. I suggest getting yourself some hot rollers if you don't already have some. Hot rollers are my secret weapon at home. When I want to style my hair quickly and easily with guaranteed results, I grab the hot rollers. They do the work for you. Other supplies to have on hand are bobby pins, hair tie, styling product (gel or mousse), hairspray and accessories (i.e. pretty clips or a headband).

Who doesn't like a little sparkle?

I spent the whole weekend after Thanksgiving decorating my house for Christmas. I always get excited to dig out all of my things and put them out to enjoy again. Each year I like to change it up a little bit, and I'm always looking to add more sparkle everywhere. As I was admiring the sparkle I was pulling out of my Christmas storage boxes I thought to myself, 'Everyone needs more sparkle in their hair.'

This is the time of year that everything dries out and lacks moisture. I encourage you to add some sparkle to your hair with hair color. There are so many options to achieve this, and it doesn't mean a drastic change in your current look. It just means shiny and luxurious hair that will have everyone staring. You can get sparkle in your hair many ways. Maybe you just need to stop putting yourself on the bottom of your to-do list and call to make an appointment with your hairdresser to get your color touched up. Using a demi-permanent color (lasts about four weeks and is a deposit-only color) can add extreme hydration and shine to your hair without really changing your color, unless you're looking for a more drastic change. There is even the option of just adding a clear color to your hair. I call it a 'top-coat.' Think about what a top-coat of nail polish does for your nails and how shiny it makes it. This is what a clear color can do for your hair.

Short is in

My clients are always asking me about the new trends. I tend to think that there is never just one trend in hair. I have, however, been telling everyone for the last year that this trend was coming and I think it is speaking for itself these days with many celebrities joining in. What is this trend you ask? Short hair is in, and in a big way.

I could sense it was time for this trend to resurface after years of everyone wanting long hair and even spending tons on extensions in order to achieve this look. You started seeing celebrities cutting their hair, which most likely is them being forced to take a break from extensions in all reality. Either way, we have seen hair getting shorter and shorter.

Make a list. Check it twice

We may not want to admit it, but it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I love this time of year - there are definitely some great deals to be had all over town on almost everything. I want to bring to your attention one place you may have overlooked when it comes to holiday shopping. Your hairdresser and the salon your go to is going to have some great deals to offer you through the end of the year.

This is the time of year when our salons have access to the great deals that our product companies offer and get to pass that savings on to you. Most of these deals come in fun gift packs this time of year, but they are a way for you to save on your favorite products. These savings really only come once a year, so stock up while you can.

Pamper your man

The sale of men's grooming products has grown 70 percent in the last five years. In the last two decades, Paul Mitchell has been the leading product purchased by men. Yet when it comes to hair and fashion, we tend to focus on women only. Our poor men get lost in the shuffle.

While most of you men out there head to your local barber or walk-in salon and get your "quick and cheap" haircut, there are plenty of you who do really care about your appearance and the type of service you receive. I believe that you guys would love getting pampered too. You just haven't given it a shot yet.

Head Lice 101 in 2013

Schools are about to finish for the summer, but that doesn't mean you are free from the risk of lice. It is a topic none of us really ever want to talk about, but if you have children you should be aware of this very common and persistent problem.

Recently I have been made aware of many reported cases of lice in the Bangor and Ellsworth area. Head lice is out there, but if taken care of promptly and properly will go away as fast as it came.
