'The Marvelous Wonderettes'

Penobscot Theatre revisits the '50s and '60s

BANGOR - Penobscot Theatre, Bangor's professional theatre company, continues its 38th season with one of the most popular musicals of the last 15 years, 'The Marvelous Wonderettes' by Roger Bean. Picking up where 'Forever Plaid' left off, 'The Marvelous Wonderettes' assembles a quartet of women performing the '50s and '60s hits that were popularized by women. This utterly charming revue is in performance from Oct. 26 - Nov. 13 at the historic Bangor Opera House.

''The Marvelous Wonderettes' has everything you could want in a musical, a great score, beautiful design elements, a hilarious yet meaningful story and an incredibly talented cast that deliver amazing vocals and crisp choreography,' said Interim Artistic Director Nathan Halvorson.

Boats banned from Davis Stream

JEFFERSON - The Maine Departments of Environmental Protection and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife are temporarily banning all boats on a portion of Davis Stream following the find of the invasive aquatic plant hydrilla there earlier this month.

The surface use restriction, which starts 400 feet upstream of Jefferson Market and extends northward on the main stem of the stream until it reaches Route 126, is effective immediately and will run through ice formation. Next spring, the departments will jointly consider whether to reissue the restriction.

By the order, signed by DEP Acting Commissioner Pattie Aho and IFW Commissioner Chandler Woodcock, no watercraft may enter or travel this reach of Davis Stream which joins Damariscotta Lake in the village of Jefferson except in emergency situations or when the environmental department and endorsed volunteers are doing survey or removal work related to the hydrilla infestation.

BANGOR - In the midst of autumn color and cooling temperatures, Rape Response Services announces its Annual Auction. This distinctive event provides an evening of fun, laughter, conversation, delicious hors d'oeuvres, lively music and spirited bidding wars. Among the many items to be auctioned are an autographed Stephen King book, Josh Beckett autographed baseball donated by the Boston Red Sox, and a beautiful queen-sized quilt handcrafted by the Zonta Club of Bangor.

All proceeds will go to Rape Response Services to support individuals impacted by sexual violence and efforts to prevent all aspects of this violent crime. A recent study found that nearly one in five Maine residents reports that they have been the victim of rape or attempted rape during their lifetime; roughly 14,000 Maine residents may be the victim of rape or unwanted sexual activity during any 12-month period.
