Time Waster - Rocket Santa'

'Rocket Santa' is a launch game in which Santa is trying to get gifts to men stationed on the moon. (You realize that you don't need a ton of plot for some of these games.)

Bereft of Reindeer, Santa propels himself with increasingly more powerful rockets and collects 'space cash' on his way up (remember what I said about plot?). It's a simple game, and as you get higher you get more cash to purchase more upgrades and eventually break free of the atmosphere and shoot the moon.

A lot like Christmas

Each year Christmas gets exponentially better. The first couple were a blur of the kids not really understanding what was going on or caring about anything beyond the wrapping paper and the boxes that some of their presents came in.

Last year, there was some excitement and some fun to be had during the buildup towards and celebration of Christmas. But this year is different. This year they know. This year it matters.

Christmas in Maine' - A treasure made new

Just shy of 75 years ago, Robert P. Tristram Coffin published 'Christmas in Maine,' a rich and evocative tale of what celebrating Christmas was like growing up on a salt-water farm in Maine. Islandport Press has reprinted the book with illustrations by woodblock print artist Blue Butterfield to create an experience that is as richly illustrated as it is told.

Coffin's prose glitters on the page, evoking warm, colorful scenes, family members you feel that you know and food you can almost taste. The words wrap around you like a well-made blanket, and you can almost hear the snap of the fire and the crinkle of wrapping paper. These are simple times turned into a veritable treasure chest as he compares the sights and sounds of Maine to precious gems diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies. But it's the very simplicity that is the treasure.

Skewed View - (12/09/15)

This week's view is sometimes, but not always, seen from Castine. Occasionally it's gone with some of the local student population with it. The name is pretty easy, considering where we live. (Photo by Katy England)

Last week's skewed view was from the curved frontage of one of Bangor's new eateries, Evenrood's. Inside the restaurant is the bank vault, now part of the dcor. (Photo by Katy England)

Our household is a finely tuned machine. You wouldn't know by looking at it the house is a mess, and most interactions I have with people probably leave them thinking I'm a couple chocolate creams short of a box of chocolates. That doesn't negate the fact that my schedule and my husband's schedule and the kids' schedules are all interconnected like a massive and ever-changing Gordian knot.

Every two months my husband's schedule changes which means my schedule changes, at least if the kids are home. Since they started school there's always a good chance I can have a decent chunk of morning devoted to work a refreshing change, to be sure.

Time Waster - Ultimate Santa Battle'

Tis the season to destroy Shadow Demons with your elf sidekicks and get enough money to buy all the children of the world presents for Christmas because that is what 'Ultimate Santa Battle' is all about.

This is an upgrade shooter where you play as St. Nick, buy upgrades as you level up, and try to destroy the minions of evil to the tune of many a rocking Christmas ballad. He knows when you are sleeping, and knows when you have been captured by evil shadow spawn bet you wish you had been good so Santa would save your butt from darkness, eh?

Effing Worms Xmas'

If you haven't played the 'Effing Worms' series, it's a viciously fun way to waste your time and there's a holiday edition! You play the earth-dwelling, murderous worm that attacks and devours surface dwellers.

In this case, those above ground are Santa's helpers, elves, reindeer, little white bunnies and the occasional abominable snowman and you eat them.

Checking it twice

I love the holidays. Yeah, I'm one of those people. Pretty much from the start of Halloween until we ring in the New Year, I'm enjoying the weird, giddy mood that infuses this time of year. Look, I agree with most people that the Christmas music needs to wait until after Thanksgiving but once December is here, it's no holds barred on my belting out carols in the car, at home, at work (sorry, boss!).

Shopping has become harder with the three kids - not so much doing the shopping but finding time for it. I tend to shop for the kids in dribs and drabs all year round, and then do shopping for everyone else in my life around this time of year. Lots of preplanning.
