Criminal Mischief - (01/06/2016)

Kids n' Kops trading cards promoting healthy messages for youths
BANGOR/ORONO The Bangor and University of Maine police departments have launched a new Kids n' Kops trading card program intended to raise awareness about bullying and substance abuse prevention among elementary and middle school youngsters.
The series of 14 trading cards features male and female UMaine student-athletes who play Division I sports at the state's flagship university. Members of the Bangor and UMaine police departments will distribute the cards at community events, including university athletic games at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor and on campus.
Youngsters can collect five cards and bring them to one of the two police departments for a free Kids n' Kops T-shirt and two tickets to a UMaine basketball game.

Best Christmas ever

In the early times, you go through the motions of many of the holidays with the kids: it's less for the kids and more for you. As they grow, they catch on to what's going on and begin to anticipate each holiday in question. And there will come a time when you hit the sweet spot that moment when they understand what's going on and are excited without getting crazy. This was that year.
Everything about the holiday season was awesome, from picking up the Christmas tree to putting up the lights. Everything was met with gasps and coos from the kids. One of my girls would walk around the house and wish everyone in the room 'Merry Christmas!' If no one was in the room, she'd address her stuffed animals, or the Christmas tree itself.

Time Waster: 'Coloruid'

'Coloruid' is a challenging and unique color-based game. You have a certain number of moves depending on the level. You can select from five colors (blue, green, pink, yellow and orange) and use them to fill in other colors. What makes this game interesting is that there are physics at play, and the color blobs are not always static. They can ooze out of their designated spots, and when you fill in a color with a new one, each of the boxes shakes, and it can change up your playing field.

Stormy Weather

MAINE The difference between this winter and last year's winter is stark, with temperatures well into the 40s and 50s throughout November and December. Not only did we not have a white Christmas, the snow that did fall Christmas week was rather light, and only 75 households experienced loss of power here in Maine.
Although this most recent storm, dubbed 'Goliath,' wreaked havoc across much of the country, Maine was mostly spared this time around.
The contrast underscores the unpredictable nature of Maine storms, which can make planning difficult. We sat down with folks from Emera Maine to find out what goes into the prep and restoration when a nasty storm does hit.

Weekly Time Waster

Look back on wasting time

Wasting time is one of my favorite parts about this job and we've had some doozies! Matt Bellassai's 'Whine About It' segment earned me some critical mail (apparently enjoying the show is enabling his drinking habit which is true, but I still watch it). Enchanted Cave II and GemCraft: Chasing Shadows sucked away large portions of my time. Rusty Lake was also in the running for the epic 'Cube Escape' series that has a half dozen free escape games under their belt.

But the best one had to be Kongregate's 'Cute Overload Challenge.' This was going down the rabbit hole of wasting time, because it wasn't just one game it was a game about playing games. And it cute! And you won cute little 'Kongpanions' for playing it. All of the ingredients for a wasted life. Thank you Kongregate, you win at my being a loser!

Multiple looks back

Man, things have changed. Whenever I see people I haven't seen in a while they are surprised at how old the kids are. So am I. I can't believe it's been four years. Four years, five Christmases, half a school year, several trips to the ER, countless boo-boos, sleepless nights and awesomeness.

There have been several things I don't have to do any more, as well as new things I'm just starting to figure out. Here's a few from both camps.

Skewed View - (12/30/15)

This view comes from Downtown Bangor where there is a lot of glass to be seen. The street is the name of one of the founding fathers but not one of our presidents. (Photo by Katy England)
