Mystic mysteries in the City of Dark Magic'

Fantasy thriller blends and transcends genres

Prague is a city of mysteries. While many European cities have histories filled with intrigue and mysticism, Prague might well surpass them all. It was once a place of vast wealth and cultural depth; even today, after years of damage done by Nazis and communists, it remains a place of significance.

And according to Magnus Flyte, Prague is also the 'City of Dark Magic' (Penguin, $16). Flyte the shared pseudonym of writers Meg Howrey and Christina Lynch has taken this city that has been home to royalty and rabble and alchemists and artists and constructed a tale of mystical mystery and intrigue.

Thanksgiving throwdown

The holidays can be a stressful time. Every family unit has its own unique quirks; these quirks can definitely lead to strained interpersonal relations. We've all had to deal with a horrifyingly racist grandparent or a druncle or two; it's all a part of dealing with the season. But there are certain lines that shouldn't be crossed, no matter how awkward the circumstances.

For instance, getting into a full-on brawl with your baby mama's new man on her front lawn in front of your kid on Thanksgiving morning is not acceptable behavior. And yet that's exactly what Gabriel Aubry father of Halle Berry's 4-year-old daughter Nahla did.

Giving thanks in the movies

A look at some films with Thanksgiving themes

As a rule, when we hear the term 'holiday movie,' we almost automatically equate it to 'Christmas movie.' It's understandable Christmas is by far the most cinematically celebrated holiday. But is that fair? There are other holidays after all including one right around the corner.

So in that spirit, here are a few 'holiday' favorites that revolve not around Christmas trees but rather turkey dinners. Thanksgiving, while vastly underrepresented in the world of Hollywood, has still managed to serve as the setting for a few great (and some not-so-great) film offerings.
