An end to the Iron age? Iron Man 3'

Super sequel doesn't quite measure up to previous installments

The start of the summer blockbuster season has been continually getting pushed earlier and earlier. Once upon a time, that season reliably started with Memorial Day weekend; you could set your watch by it. But things have changed; now, with this first weekend in May, the summer blockbusters are in full swing.

First out of the gate? 'Iron Man 3.'

The 5th Wave' powerful and compelling

Young adult book quality reading for all ages

While it is important to make a distinction when it comes to young adult fiction, there is no doubt that YA literature is at its absolute best when it blurs that line between 'young' and 'adult.' Just because a book's primary audience skews younger doesn't mean that it can't be well-written. It doesn't mean that it has to be condescending in any way. Kids know when they are being talked down to; the best YA stuff always respects the intelligence of its audience.

Make way for the next big thing in young adult fiction. 'The 5th Wave' (Putnam, $18.99) is coming.

Place your bets!

Gambling on the Kentucky Derby

BANGOR I've engaged in a lot of sports-related endeavors over the years. I've played a lot of sports. I've watched a lot of sports. I've participated in March Madness brackets and fantasy football and even placed a bet or two at a sports book.

But I had never bet on the Kentucky Derby.

Celebrity Slam - May 8, 2013

Ain't no fortunate son

It's always a roll of the dice when it comes to the children of the hyper-famous. Sometimes, they manage to navigate the minefield of vast wealth and implied entitlement and still find a way to come out the other side as a reasonable, relatively decent human being. Other times, they turn out to be utterly self-superior nozzles.

Unfortunately, it seems that young Patrick Schwarzenegger is the latter.

The still-teenaged Patrick (he's 19) used someone else's ID to gain entrance to The Sayers Club, a Hollywood nightspot. Not the smartest move, but hey he's a kid. Kids pull dumb stuff sometimes. But if that was all, we wouldn't be talking about this right now.

Previewing some of 2013's summer cinematic offerings

It's that time again. Hollywood has opened up their checkbooks and unleashed all manner of cinematic fare onto the masses. That's right blockbuster season.

2013 has plenty to offer. Big budgets are abundant. We've got iconic characters returning to the silver screen. We've got beloved franchises receiving their next installments. And we've got a number of different takes on the end of the world as we know it, both in the near-view and from the far-flung future.

Will all of these films be good? Heavens no. Will they all be entertaining? Also not likely. But rest assured, film fans of any stripe will be able to find something that tickles their fancy. There's a whole lot out there this handful is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Pain & Gain' will pump you up

Real-life tale shows truth is stranger than fiction

Michael Bay and 'based on a true story' doesn't really seem to make a lot of sense, does it? This is a guy who somehow managed to make giant transforming alien robots even more infantile and ridiculous in practice than in theory is he really the guy to bring truth to the screen?

Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, the answer would be a resounding 'no.' However, he has somehow managed to find the one story where the answer is a giddy, glorious 'yes.'

The Big Wedding' should be annulled

Romantic comedy neither loving nor funny

On paper, an all-star cast makes a lot of sense. It would stand to reason that when you bring a lot of diverse talents together in the same place, something good would happen. Unfortunately, it rarely works out that way.

Whether it's a matter of too many cooks in the kitchen, conflicting egos or a simple lack of real commitment from some (or all) of the cast, these collections of well-known film stars almost always fall a bit flat.

Nerd' is the word

Ten Bucks Theatre presents frantic farce

EDDINGTON There's an old saying that states 'Houseguests, like fish, begin to stink after three days.' But what if the host feels an obligation to that houseguest? Well, then one just plugs one's nose and tries to stick it out.

'The Nerd' features just such a houseguest and just such a host. Ten Bucks Theatre is presenting their production of Larry Shue's farce at Comins Hall in Eddington. The show runs through May 5; all tickets are $10.

Red Sox Report Card April

We're a month into the 2013 Major League Baseball season and things are looking awfully good so far for the Boston Red Sox. They're sitting at the top of the division and performing well in just about every aspect of the game.

While they've had to deal with some injuries, the general esprit de corps of this team has made them a pleasure to watch a far cry from the frankly unlikeable squads Boston has sported over the past couple of seasons. Regardless, it's nice to have baseball back.

Patriots 2013 Draft Review

New England focuses on depth in weak draft

The New England Patriots draft strategy in recent years has involved a lot of wheeling and dealing. Coach Bill Belichick seems to take particular delight in trading down and accumulating more and more future assets. While it certainly makes sense as a long-term strategy, in the short term it can feel a bit frustrating. We want to see the team take shots at top-level players, rather than being content with quantity over quality.

However, in a draft such as this one a draft that is viewed as a relatively weak one at the top the strategy of accumulating value makes a lot of sense. So it should have come as no surprise that New England traded out of the first round; they got a handful of picks from the Minnesota Vikings and fleshed out a draft in which they initially only had a few picks.
