'Being the mom, I had a couple of friends killed in a car accident last year from excessive speed. I found an organization in southern part of the state, Save Speed for the Track,' said Cindy Libby. 'It's good to take the avenue of racing and make something productive out of it.'

Libby said that Emma has painted her car with the Save Speed for the Track's logo and colors and will be spreading the message at the Stock Car event being held at the Bangor Mall this weekend. She thinks her daughter will be able to connect with young people in a way that adult racers may not be able to.

'Emma just turned 14; she's not even old enough to have a permit,' said Cindy. '[Her young fans may think] if she can do it, I can do it.'

She hopes it will make some of the young people think about the decisions they make and remember to question whether or not they should get in the car with someone who recently got his or her license.

'If you're going to drive with someone, make sure you're approved, don't just think it's OK,' she said. 'If your gut doesn't think you should be in that car, don't go in it.'

In her first full season of stock car racing, Emma brought in 10 wins and is even competing against grown men. Safety is of great importance to her and her family. Emma's father actually built the car she is currently racing in and is working on a new one so she can race in another division.

'If we're going to do this, we're going to do it right and have it safe,' Cindy explained. They hired out to have a cage put into the car, but the rest was installed by her husband. 'He's very good about getting safety equipement, and shopping around.'
