TENANTS HARBOR The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is hosting a weekend camp for adults that will focus on food preservation Oct. 24.

'Savor the Season A Food Preservation Weekend at Blueberry Cove Camp,' will be held at the 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Blueberry Cove in Tenants Harbor.

Participants can relive childhood camp experiences or create new ones by making new friends during fireside chats, exploring the camp's seaside grounds and learning the latest food preservation techniques.

Three workshops will be taught by UMaine Extension staff and Master Food Preserver volunteers. Workshop topics are fruit preserves, drying and fermenting, and pickles and salsa.

Registration is $325 and includes all programs, homemade meals prepared with locally grown ingredients, and rustic accommodations. To learn more about Savor the Season or to request a disability accommodation, call 781-6099 or (800) 287-1471 (in Maine), or visit

Savor the Season is a fundraising event for Blueberry Cove Camp. Founded in the late 1940s, Blueberry Cove was one of the earliest children's summer camps in Maine. It has 1,400 feet of protected ocean beach and salt marsh providing swimming beaches, tidal flats, forests, meadows, gardens, a harbor and islands to explore. After closing in 1985, the property was saved from possible development in 2005 when volunteers set out to revive and re-open the camp.

Now managed by UMaine Extension, it again offers day camp and weekly residential programs for children. Activities include hiking, watershed discovery, swimming, drama, art, wilderness skills, local ecology, gardening, global awareness, canoeing, sustainable living and sailing.
