ORONO - Winter public star shows continue to astound audiences by bringing the vast universe straight to viewers at the Emera Astronomy Center. Four spectacular star shows are scheduled for this month, providing plenty of opportunities to blast off into space and explore the night sky.

On Dec. 3 at 11 a.m., especially for homeschoolers, star explorers have the opportunity to adventure into space with a curious Coyote in 'Earth, Moon, and Sun.' For ages 6-12, 'Earth, Moon, Sun' demonstrates the lunar phases, eclipses, day and night, and the sun, as well as a live tour of the Maine sky, with all of its beautiful constellations.

ORONO During a laboratory dedication this morning at the University of Maine, the Harold Alfond Foundation announced a $3.9 million grant to the University of Maine to match $9.98 million already raised, formally establishing the Harold Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering Laboratory and Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center on campus.

'We are investing in people and infrastructure that will support ocean engineering, and advanced manufacturing education and research, and grow Maine jobs,' said Gregory Powell, chairman of the Harold Alfond Foundation.

AUGUSTA Maine residents and businesses sending trees, wreaths, or other decorative plant material around the country this holiday season can save money and lost products by noting important plant health regulations enforced by other states, according to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF).

'Shippers should be aware of the many state laws and regulations regarding the movement of plants and forest products,' warned Ann Gibbs, Division of Animal and Plant Health director. 'Many states closely monitor shipments to prevent infestation by invasive insects and the spread of plant diseases. Planning ahead benefits Maine shippers by speeding along deliveries in this time-sensitive industry.'

OLD TOWN The Relay For Life of Penobscot will be held at the Old Town High School track in June of 2016. 'RSU 34 Superintendent David Walker and Principal Scott Gordon have been instrumental in this process and are happy to welcome our event back to Old Town,' says Trafton. 'We are incredibly thankful to the University of Maine for hosting us for the past five years at Morse Field, and are looking ahead to having warmer weather this coming June.'
