Bangor YMCA holds Snowshoe Race at Camp Jordan

ELLSWORTH The storm may have many people on edge, but there is a hardcore group of people who are cheering its arrival. And if that is you, you may want to sign up for the Bangor YMCA's Snowshoe Race which will take place on Feb. 28 at the Bangor YMCA's Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan in Ellsworth (101 Jordan Way).

'This is the first time we've done this. Part of our goal is to provide an outdoor weekend a place for people to get outside and really enjoy what we have,' said John Quinn, the adventure program director at the Bangor YMCA. 'The other goal is to showcase the Wilderness Center. We have the summer camp there in the summer, but it's there 12 months of the year. There are really cool trails. One of my goals is to expand that facility for use year-round.'

The race is built for all skill levels and includes a 1K, 5k and 10K option, depending on age and skill level. The 1K race is geared towards kids ages 8 to 14 and costs $5 to register; the 5K is for ages 14-plus and costs $20 to register; and the 10K is for hardcore enthusiasts ages 14-plus and costs $25 to register.

'The 1K is for people just starting out maybe they've been on snowshoes a couple of times or they got them for Christmas. The 5K is the fun run. Some people will walk some people will run. Some people will start off running and end up walking. It's really for all abilities,' said Quinn. 'The 10K is the extreme race. It's for people who have done races before and competed in snowshoeing events and really want to challenge themselves. Hopefully, we've got something for everyone.'

For those that aren't planning on donning the snowshoes and participating or simply want to cheer on their favorite snowshoer, there will be a big bonfire, heated indoor space for people to warm up and Quinn hopes they will get some sponsors for a hot cocoa station and warm food.
