'This event has just grown and grown every year,' said Angela Arno, executive director of the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce. 'It's almost like an annual reunion for some of the seaplane pilots, and Saturday in particular is a lot of fun for people who want to make a daytrip to the Moosehead region out of it.'
Thursday and Friday's events are largely pilot-driven, including registration, and get-togethers.
Saturday's events begin with a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Temple on Pritham Ave. starting at 7 a.m. A craft fair will be held in Downtown Greenville throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday and the American Legion on Pritham Avenue will be serving food all day.
Starting around 10 a.m. Saturday, activities will be held at the Greenville Municipal Airport and the Seaplane Base. Activities are scheduled to include the bomb drop, spot landing, take-off contest, taxi slalom, and 'Bush Pilots Canoe Race,' which was invented in Greenville. In this race, a pilot and a canoe take off at the same time to see which arrives at their destination first. Then they tie the canoe to the plane and fly back to the starting place.
'It's always a little sad to see the final days of summer upon us, but this is truly one of the bright spots of the season,' said Arno. 'It was an idea that stemmed from the desire to have people visit Moosehead after Labor Dayand 42 years later it's still going strong. It's a great sense of community and fun. Those who have not experienced this in the past should absolutely try to make plans to join us this year or in the future.'
Any events that cannot take place due to weather will be scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. Also on Sunday, a 50/50 raffle will be held and drawings for gift baskets.
