The Sports Edge Farewell to the 2016 Sox

Farewell to the 2016 Boston Red Sox, a team that, in the never-to-be-forgotten words of former Vikings coach Dennis Green, were who we thought they were.

(Note: Boston's two October regular season games are also being included in this analysis.)

Quite a ride, wouldn't you say?

The Sports Edge Seems like (not so) old times

The recent weekend sweep of the New York Yankees by the Red Sox was a thing to behold, as it not only solidified the team's playoff position for the first time since 2013, but effectively ruined anyremote chance that the Yankees could get in. It also sent other teams in baseball the clear message that, despite their many ups and downs along the way, this team is peaking at the right time.

Red Sox Report Card August 2016

Well, this probably shouldn't come as a surprise.

The Boston Red Sox are in the thick of things in the American League playoff race as of the end of August, they sat two games behind the Blue Jays for the division lead and two games ahead of the Orioles and Tigers for the first wild card spot. They are very much in contention.

Red Sox Report Card - June 2016

What goes up must come down.

That's the unfortunate reality faced by the Boston Red Sox, whose white-hot month of May essentially ensured that June was going to be a letdown to some degree. The team just couldn't be expected to maintain that level of production for a full season.

Red Sox Report Card May 2016

You probably don't need me to tell you that May was a very good month for the Boston Red Sox.

The team has put up the best record in the American League for the month, along with some of the most impressive offensive numbers we've seen in quite some time. Apparently, April showers bring May power.

Waning Moments

I began writing a column under this title for the Maine Campus in 2002 and have never quite been able to shake the name. With a handle like mine, there aren't a lot of cleverly-turned phrases or pop culture references available, so if you think you may have read something similarly named a handful and a half years ago, you probably did.

Red Sox Report Card July 2015

In the years since I first started writing this feature, the Boston Red Sox have seen a lot of ups and downs. There have been some great moments and some that were not so great. But never have I been so tempted to simply abandon the Report Card.

Suffice it to say, it hasn't been a good month.

Red Sox Report Card June 2015

It's probably safe to say that the last vestiges of Red Sox optimism are swirling the drain.

We're essentially at the halfway point of the season enough time has elapsed for even the most diehard to accept the reality that the seemingly-solid plan going into 2015 has proven to be less sturdy than anticipated.

Red Sox Report Card (09/03/14)

For anyone still paying attention, the 2014 season has turned into a real slog for the Boston Red Sox. This team the defending World Series champion is nestled firmly in last place in the American League East, 20 games out of first place. Heck, they're six games out of fourth. Suffice it to say, there's no miracle finish that could possibly pull Boston out of the morass. They'd have to get red hot just to have a shot at finishing at .500.

Obviously, that's not going to happen. Instead, the time has come to start searching for the positive. We look at the trades that were made at the deadline and tell ourselves that this team has set itself up for success in 2015. Of course, we have no idea how successful (or unsuccessful) they'll be next year. But they'll be different. Maybe they'll be younger. Maybe the kids will step up and the new guys will play big and the old guard can pull out one more vintage season. It's a lot of maybes, but that's where we're at with the Sox. It's the nature of the game. So it goes.
