New business is a-groomin' in Brewer

Lee's Outback Grooming opens in North Brewer Plaza

BREWER - Lee Kraemer Hanscom of Orrington has some very hairy customers walking through the doors of his new business these days, and that's just what he was hoping for. This dog groomer decided to venture out and open his own salon, Lee's Outback Grooming, in the North Brewer Plaza after working and training at Petco.

"I've always wanted to have my own grooming business. I didn't care for the corporate setting. There wasn't a lot of leeway, and I wanted to offer things that corporate places couldn't offer at a much more affordable price," Hanscom explained.

Bike ride for wet noses

Brewer student raises over $1K for Bangor Humane Society

BREWER - Do you remember what you did the summer before entering 5th grade? Brewer Community School student Matthew Gross won't be able to forget it. This dog lover set a goal in August of riding his bike and raising $300 for the Bangor Humane Society. Three weeks later, he completed that bike ride and raised just over $1,000 for the dogs at the shelter.

"I was watching this dog competition show and the winner's dog was from a pound. When he gave his prize money to that pound, more people starting adopting dogs," explained Matthew Gross. "That's when I got a piece of paper and wrote down I wanted to raise $300 for the Bangor Humane Society."

BANGOR - Most people stay inside their vehicle while visiting the car wash, but ever since Tradewinds added a new pet wash station to their Bangor, Brewer and Blue Hill locations, customers have been hopping out to get their four-legged friends clean too.

"This is awesome. There is no mess in the house, the dogs don't mind it because it's air conditioned and it's warm water," said Lisa Reider of Veazie.

Reider has brought her golden retriever, Baxter, and black lab, Bailey, to the All Paws Pet Wash at the Union Street Tradewinds several times since it opened two months ago.

Thundershirts for dogs

New wearable pressure wrap can help storm phobic pooches

BANGOR - Thunderstorms can be a pet owner's worst nightmare, and this time of year it's almost impossible to get away from them.

"You may have some dogs that hide behind a chair or under a bed. Some dogs may bolt out of any opening, even a window, breaking the glass. Then you can have the real odd dogs, like our Gus, who growled, barked and snarled, wanting to get to whatever it was [making the noise] and tear it apart," explained Don Hanson, owner of Green Acres Kennel Shop in Bangor.

Fortunately, there's now a new tool available locally to help ease the anxiety of pooches who fear thunderstorms.

Who let the dogs out?

Dog owners unite for weekly walks in Bangor area

BREWER - We all know exercise is good for us and our four-legged friends. So a handful of area residents that have formed the group Bangor Area Boston Terriers, or BABT, are making walking together a part of their weekly routine.

"Our leader Claire started the group because she was alone with her two Boston Terriers and she wanted to meet new people and get her dogs together with other terriers," BABT group member Lisa Andersen explained. "She actually met her husband through her terriers. He was looking for a dog, thought her dogs looked interesting and so he got her phone number and they eventually got married."

The BABT group has been meeting at the Spring Street park in Brewer on Saturdays where they set out on a stroll with other dog walkers complete with leash, water, doggy treats and waste bags in hand.
