Adrian Beltre joins 3,000 hit club

Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre became the 31st player in Major League Baseball history to reach 3,000 hits for his career. The milestone hit – a double – came on July 30 against Baltimore Orioles starter Wade Miley in the fourth inning.

That hasn’t stopped author Jay Jaffe from trying to find a way – to create one, really; his new book “The Cooperstown Casebook: Who’s In the Hall of Fame, Who Should Be In, and Who Should Pack Their Plaques” (Thomas Dunne, $25.99) is a meticulously-researched and engagingly-written work that not only celebrates the greats in the Hall, but also points out a few of the greats still stuck outside the gates and a number of mediocre players who snuck in through luck and/or cronyism.

Red Sox Report Card – June 2017

With the end of June, we’ve basically reached the de facto halfway point of the MLB season. Sure, the All-Star break is generally considered “midseason,” but in terms of a true midpoint, the end of June is it – three months down, three to go.

The Major League Baseball draft is vastly different from those of the other major sports leagues. In the NFL and the NBA and to a slightly lesser extent the NHL, draft picks are expected to join their new teams and start performing more or less immediately.

Not so with MLB.

Major League Baseball has the longest season of any of the major professional sports leagues, with 162 games to be played before reaching the October postseason. That many games leaves room for a lot of changes to happen over the season's six-month course.

It sure has been great having baseball back.

As always, the long winter left us waiting in great anticipation for the return of the thump of the glove and the crack of the bat. Spring has sprung and the Boston Red Sox – along with MLB’s 29 other teams – have taken the field.
