The Sports Edge – Post-Papi Depression

This week we look at the second part of our Red Sox season preview featuring the offense, which must deal with the loss of the big bat and bigger presence of David Ortiz.

The Sports Edge - In praise of Papi

What's your Big Papi moment?

It seems like every Red Sox fan has one and that's because the story of David Ortiz and his impact on his team and adopted hometown can't be measured simply in numbers, even though those numbers are remarkable.

The Sports Edge Seems like (not so) old times

The recent weekend sweep of the New York Yankees by the Red Sox was a thing to behold, as it not only solidified the team's playoff position for the first time since 2013, but effectively ruined anyremote chance that the Yankees could get in. It also sent other teams in baseball the clear message that, despite their many ups and downs along the way, this team is peaking at the right time.

Red Sox Report Card - July 2016

And the rollercoaster ride continues.

The Red Sox have had an OK July in terms of their record; they remain solidly in the playoff hunt despite the unexpected competitiveness at the top of the AL East. They've won more than they've lost for the month, though they certainly missed opportunities to have a much better stretch.

Red Sox Report Card May 2016

You probably don't need me to tell you that May was a very good month for the Boston Red Sox.

The team has put up the best record in the American League for the month, along with some of the most impressive offensive numbers we've seen in quite some time. Apparently, April showers bring May power.

There ain't no good guys

Friend of our show Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald recently wrote a column on good guys and bad guys in sports, focusing on David Ortiz of the Red Sox and Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez.

Thanks for the presents

It's the week before Christmas and writers everywhere are busily putting together the most hackneyed of columns. You know it, right? The one where they list what their favorite teams, players and coaches might want for Christmas? Not that I'm above clichd writing, but I thought I would at least attempt to go a different route.

Instead, I'd like to celebrate the gifts we Maine sports fans have already been given. We're pretty lucky to live in an area that has a passion for sports, both local and regional, and our interest has been rewarded with an abundance of great teams, memorable players and talented coaches. This week we say thanks for just a few:

Red Sox ascendant

Maybe it's all the Vitamin D I've soaked up from playing in a few golf tournaments this weekend, but I am filled with optimism. I don't think it's the sun, I think it's the Boston Red Sox slowly but surely climbing in the standings of the American League East. Don't look now, but the Sox are in third place! The pain of injuries that were like a swift kick to the groin back in April and May is subsiding and Boston is getting healthy. Look out Major League Baseball - here they come.

David Ortiz continues to drink from the fountain of youth like my friend Jimmy at an open bar wedding. He's been swinging the bat like Thor would a hammer. Sitting on 399 career HRs, my hope is that he can wait to hit fateful number 400 at Fenway Park. Honestly, if someone would have said to you that Big Papi would have 20+ dingers at the All-Star break you would likely have offered them some water and said 'sober up.' But here he is, the team's club house leader and easily the best Designated Hitter in baseball. We can talk about legitimate MVP candidacy at a later date.
