BELFAST - The people behind Belfast Community Radio, WBFY 100.9 FM, have scheduled a free “Meet the Programmers” Halloween Ball, for Monday, Oct. 16, at 5:30 PM, at First Baptist Church, 95 High St. in Belfast.

WBFY made its official on-air launch on Dec. 17 of last year from their basement studio at Waterfall Arts (formerly the Anderson Elementary School), located at 256 High St. in Belfast.

“The station had been in the works for several years,” station volunteer Jennifer Hill said during a recent interview. “On September 19, 2016, we were given a ‘now or never’ ultimatum. A group of us got together and went full-tilt.”

The radio station features many area residents in both an on-air capacity and in various roles behind the scenes.

The type of music and conversation heard on each WBFY show is handled on an individual basis. WBFY’s programming can be classified as “free-form,” with each on-air personality in charge of designing the format and playlist for their respective shows.

Fifty-four different WBFY shows are listed on the station’s website (, with various show formats including rock, jazz, blues, jam-band, oldies, swing, classical, bluegrass, Hawaiian music, comedy, health and local issues.

Of special interest to fans of the band Phish is "The Errant Path," a show hosted by the group's drummer Jon Fishman. Described as "wide ranging ramblings around the world of music," the program airs live each Wednesday from 9-11 p.m.

Each program is listed, along with its corresponding day and time. In addition to being heard over the air, WBFY streams live worldwide through its website.

“My program is a talk radio show which airs on Saturdays at noon. I interview interesting people from the community,” Hill said. “On Sunday at 1 p.m., we have a fun show - called ‘What’s So Funny?’ - hosted by Ginny Ford and Sonia Vazquez. Michael Houseman is an area chiropractor who has a show called ‘Healthiself.’” That program, a discussion of alternative medical practices, airs each Saturday at 3 p.m. and is repeated on Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

According to Hill, WBFY holds a potluck event with the station’s programmers on the third Monday of each month.

“We get together with each other and our listeners to talk about our shows and compare notes,” Hill said. “For October, we decided to hold a Halloween Ball to celebrate our underwriters [businesses and organizations who provide funding to keep the station on the air], our programmers and the public. People are invited to come and meet the people behind the microphone.”

Hill says that attendees of the Halloween Ball are encouraged to come in costume … or they could arrive dressed as a radio personality, if they prefer.

“For those who prefer not to dress up in costume, they could come dressed as a radio programmer, which is basically pretty dressed-down,” she said.

Music at the Meet the Programmers Halloween Ball will be provided by DJ Doug Bacon, who hosts the “Music & Memories” show on the station each Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. and again on Friday at 5:00 pm.

WBFY Operations Manager Erik Klausmeyer said he is looking forward to marking the station’s first year of operation.

"We're coming up on our one year anniversary, and over the next few months we want to share all of Belfast Community Radio’s successes, as well as our hopes for the future," Klausmeyer said via email.

With support from so many community volunteers, businesses and the City of Belfast, WBFY is poised for a very bright future as it serves the surrounding area with information and entertainment 24/7.
