Northern Lights Grooming goes mobile

HOLDEN - Business is rolling, in more ways than one, at Northern Lights Grooming. That's because owner Debra Plourde is now going mobile with her dog grooming business.

"Mobile is up and coming and is really the way to go now," Plourde said. "It's convenient for people. It's a lot less stressful on the animal and it's quicker than being in a shop."

BANGOR - Jaime Wood and her son aren't letting their therapy dog Zoe out of their sight ever since the Tea Cup Yorkie slipped out of her Walter Street home last week and wandered around the city before being dropped off at the Bangor Humane Society.

"She's only three pounds and so friendly. I really thought someone had just scooped her up and taken her," said Jaime Wood.

BANGOR - The Greater Bangor Bark For Life event is next month and organizers are hoping for a big turnout. This one lap walk around the Hollywood Casino Raceway is an American Cancer Society Relay For Life fundraiser and the only one of its kinds that includes bringing your four-legged family members along for the experience.

"Right now we have 13 teams all from the local area. Our goal is to have 20 teams for the event," said Shannon Small, Greater Bangor Bark For Life teams chair. "All our teams are working really hard to raise money. Team Wolf Pack came up with window decals, and Team Bangor Pet Resort and Spa had a team member make purple Paracord rope ribbon key chains to sell to raise money."

ORONO - Things tend to get a little hairy during finals week at colleges and universities around the state, but the University of Maine in Orono helped ease the stress its students may have been feeling by bringing therapy dogs on campus.

"Studies have proven that petting a dog can lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety," said Rebecca Henderson of Renaissance Dogs in Holden. "What other time are students more stressed than during finals week?"

Drama queens

Winterport’s ‘Smooth Criminals’ place drama Destination ImagiNation, head to nationals

WINTERPORT – The Smooth Criminals recently placed second in the State Championship of Destination ImagiNation, a multi-school competition that challenges students in various categories of learning, from science and engineering to writing and drama.

The Smooth Criminals, who are made up of Carly, Johannah, Gracie, Megan, Renee and Kelsea,  took second place for the drama category after they conceived a plot, assigned roles and acted out (with no dialogue) a short play for judges. Certain criteria had to be met, including the theme, which was disguise, and had to include a fancy mask and a mask that morphs (changes shape) – all without input from the adults.

The gluten free struggle

by Nikky Raney

Kali Ausplund Dionne from Tenants Harbor just turned 31 years old, but she has had to deal with gluten problems for years. In June of 2008 she was diagnosed with extensive food allergies that didn't include gluten/wheat. After restructuring her diet she was still exhibiting issues, many that mimicked thyroid disease.

"I had been told that my thyroid levels were fine, and that I just had IBS. I had all but given up on ever feeling well again. I felt arthritic, lethargic, tired, brain fuzzy and confused constantly," Dionne said.

Our hair sure does take a beating with all that we do to it. Most of you wash it every day (you need to stop doing that), blow-dry, curl, flat-iron and spray hairspray on it. How many of you really give it a day of rest? Let’s start this Sunday - every Sunday from now on, try giving your hair a break from all of that.

Hair products, minerals in the water and toxins in our environment build up on our hair. Even though I don’t want you to wash your hair every day, I do want you to use a clarifying treatment once a week to cleanse your hair of all the buildup. This buildup will cause you to have bad hair days and will also leave your color looking dull and even brassy. With summer coming, this is definitely something you want to include in your hair care regime right along with your kiddos who swim in the pool. Using a clarifying shampoo will gently cleanse your hair from the inside out. I do warn you to either ask your hairdresser what they recommend or simply use a baking soda rinse at home (baking soda paste mixed with water or your daily shampoo). Don’t just get any old clarifying shampoo from the store down the street. Many of those are way too harsh on your hair. The point of clarifying your hair is to properly cleanse it, not “strip” it and make it dry and brittle. Always ask a professional.

Only for the glamourous

by Nikky Raney

Everyone loves receiving presents. Monthly subscription boxes feel like presents in the sense that, although the subscriber pays a monthly fee, the contents of the box are always cumulatively worth more than what the subscriber paid for the subscription - and there are surprises within the boxes that one may have never thought to purchase. There's a way to receive a cute bag every month that is filled with four to five high-end make up products, and that is with a My Glam bag from Ipsy.

When trying to sign up for a My Glam bag, new subscribers are put on a waiting list for up to a month, but then for $10 a month every month a bright pink package will appear in the mail. Inside will be a special make up bag that is different every month and contains four or five products. Sometimes the bag comes with full-sized products, and sometimes it is just a travel size.

Don’t cut back for your wedding

by Regina Leonard

The recent warm weather has me thinking about my favorite time of year – wedding season. I am one of those rare hair stylists who actually loves weddings and updos. It really is one of my favorite things to do. Most often I get to travel to the bride’s wedding location to do her and her bridal party’s hair, and in Maine that usually means visiting the coast. I have been privileged to be a part of some truly gorgeous weddings.
