Kibbles and Picks 2017 - Week 7

Oof. Or in Stella’s case, woof.

Week 6 was not kind to either one of us; it was that rare occasion that both of us failed to reach the .500 mark. We sported identical 6-8 marks, splitting the six games on which we differed and managing a sad and discouraging 3-5 record on the matchups where we agreed.

It just goes to show you that this season is an even tougher one to predict than anyone expected.

Stella’s still one game out in front, but she might not be for long. We disagree on seven games this week – nearly half the slate – so there’s a real chance that someone makes a big move. I hope it’s me, but, well … you know how it is.

First up is the Tampa Bay/Buffalo tilt. I like the Bills to win this one at home. They had the bye week to rest up and I think LeSean McCoy is poised for a breakout game; he’ll run rampant over this Buccaneers defense. Stella likes the Bucs to bounce back after last week’s tough one against Arizona – mostly because she’s expecting Jameis Winston to be taking the snaps despite health concerns. She’s less confident if Winston doesn’t go, but she’s willing to roll the dice.

I’ve got Carolina to win their game against the Bears even though it is in Chicago. Cam Newton and company have been looking pretty good on offense – I like the way rookie Christian McCaffery has looked - while the Panthers D has shown some quiet improvement. Stella’s making a gut call here; she’s not all that enthusiastic about Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky, but she LOVES the Chicago run game with Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen. She loves it enough to pick them to take down Carolina.

It feels weird to pick the Saints to go into Green Bay and beat the Packers, but that’s the world we live in now. Specifically, a world in which Aaron Rodgers has a broken collarbone, leaving the Pack with an unproven backup leading the charge. The Saints defense has been not-terrible and the Drew Brees-led offense will score a ton; I think it’s enough. Stella recognizes the Rodgers factor, but also sees sufficient talent at receiver and running back to alleviate the sting. She likes guys like Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams and Aaron Jones to step up. She also believes it will be a shootout – on that, we definitely agree.

I’m playing a hunch with this next pick; I’m calling for the Colts to win at home against the Jaguars. I honestly like Jacksonville, so I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing. Stella knows precisely what she’s doing – she’s picking a Jaguars team with a talented defense and an overpowering rookie rusher in Leonard Fournette. She thinks I’m overthinking it, I think I’m underthinking it, but either way, I already regret this pick.

Mark this down: the Cardinals are going to wind up as a sneaky good squad in the second half of the season. As long as the old guys can stay on the field and the Adrian Peterson resurgence is for real, they’ll finish strong. I like them against a Rams team that has been wildly inconsistent. Stella thinks the Rams are due for a good performance and should have little trouble with Arizona. Look for 25-30 touches for Todd Gurley and a few well-timed shots downfield. It’ll be enough for L.A. to win at home.

In an AFC East matchup that might as well be a coin flip, I took the Dolphins to win at home and Stella picked the Jets as the road team. Neither one of us has any real inkling as to how this game will turn out, so we just … picked. Both teams are terrible, but both could also bust out a surprise. Literally no outcome of this game would shock us.

And last, but not least, I picked the Broncos to take down the Chargers. I have to believe that Denver’s performance against the Giants last week was an aberration; this defense will be looking to make a statement. Stella thinks that the Chargers have the pieces to give the Broncos trouble; she’s expecting that Philip Rivers will limit his turnovers and that Melvin Gordon will move the ball. Their D isn’t great, but neither is the Denver offense. Expect relatively few points either way.

And that’s that. We’ll see how things go; this week is shaping up to be a particularly impactful one in terms of the big picture here at Kibbles and Picks. A few lucky bounces and I could make a major move.

Stella remains unconcerned.
