Kibbles and Picks 2017 - Week 10

Ouch.

Week 9 was not kind to me. I only managed to muster up a mediocre 7-6 record in my pick. Meanwhile, Stella went a stellar 10-3. She doubled her season lead – from three games to six – in a single week.

Apparently, she was just toying with me up to this point and has now decided to get serious. My only hope now is to try and whittle away at her dominating lead – we’ve passed the point where I could conceivably make up all of the lost ground at once.

However, we do differ on six of Week 10’s 13 matchups, so the possibility exists for me to make a big move. Conversely, it’s not inconceivable that Stella might push her own lead to double digits. Though in truth, we’ll probably split them and be right where we started.

We’ll kick things off with the New Orleans/Buffalo game. I’ve like what I’ve seen from the Saints so far this season. Their offense is always strong, but their defense appears to have made some serious progress. I like them to take down the Bills, still reeling from their last week’s defeat at the hands of the Jets. Stella’s a fan of New Orleans as well, but she thinks that Buffalo is going to bounce back in front of the home crowd. She expects a couple of takeaways by the Bills defense and a huge game from running back LeSean McCoy will give Buffalo the victory.

Next, I’m looking at Green Bay to go into Chicago and pick up a W. While there’s no denying that the Packers have been scuffling since Aaron Rodgers went down, this Bears team isn’t scaring anyone. Look for Green Bay to pull out an ugly road win. Stella’s not buying it – she’s a Packers fan, but she doesn’t think they’re ready for the kind of ball-control battle that the Bears are going to give them. She thinks that as long as Chicago QB Mitchell Trubisky attempts fewer than 20 passes, the Bears win.

I’m picking the g-d Jets and I hate myself. Sure, they’re playing a Tampa Bay team that is dealing with numerous personnel issues – starting QB Jameis Winston is hurt and star wideout Mike Evans is suspended, for instance. And the Jets have looked solid in recent weeks. But still – it’s the Jets and I hate picking them. Stella thinks I’m undervaluing the Buccaneers; she likes Doug Martin and Desean Jackson to have big games behind backup signal-caller Ryan Fitzpatrick. I want to win, but I also hope she’s right on this one.

I’m picking Washington to win at home against the Vikings, but I’m conflicted about it. While Washington has come up with some big wins behind Kirk Cousins and company, the truth is that they’ve been weirdly inconsistent. Still, I think they’ve got the juice to deal with a Minnesota squad that’s potentially dealing with some QB changes. Stella thinks that Washington is due for a dog of a game and that the Vikings are poised to take advantage; she doesn’t care who’s under center so long as Jerrick McKinnon is getting 20 touches. She likes Minnesota for the road win.

Another one that comes about largely because I have to take some swings is my pick of the Falcons to beat the Cowboys. I’m hanging my hat on the game being in Atlanta and hoping that some of the team’s skill position guys have big days. A good performance from QB Matt Ryan would be nice, both for this and for my fantasy team. Stella regrets to inform me that the Cowboys are going to take down the Falcons. Even the uncertainty surrounding star running back Ezekiel Elliott doesn’t concern her - if he doesn’t play, it’ll be a close Dallas win; if he does, Atlanta gets blown out. She is very confident in the Cowboys here.

Finally, in what will almost certainly be a garbage game, I have picked the Giants to go into San Francisco and beat the 49ers. I have no real reason for doing so other than Stella picking the Niners. I mean, the Giants have a win and San Francisco doesn’t, so there’s that, I guess. Stella believes that the 49ers aren’t going to be winless this season and that this is one of the few chances they’ve got to get that victory. Nothing about this game is remotely good.

And here we are. Here’s hoping I can keep things from getting too far out of hand.

As always, Stella remains unconcerned.
