Kibbles and Picks 2017 – Week 2

And we’re off to the races once again.

I feel lucky to have escaped the first week only one game behind Stella. Thanks to a strong performance from the Vikings on Monday night, I landed at 9-6, while she starts the season at 10-5. Considering that I usually start the season in a much deeper hole, I’m calling this a victory.

(For the record: I was right on the Raiders, the Rams and the aforementioned Vikings. Stella correctly called the Ravens, the Lions, the Eagles and the Packers.)

This week, we’re at odds on just five contests. First up is the matchup between the Bills and the Panthers. I’m picking Carolina to win at home; I feel like Cam Newton and company are ready to build on last week’s win. Stella thinks that LeSean McCoy is going to run wild on a soft Panthers front and give Buffalo the necessary oomph to eke out a narrow victory on the road.

Even though I made the right call against the Titans last week – and Jacksonville looked strong – I’m going to take Tennessee on the road against the Jaguars. I believe Marcus Mariota is going to break out sooner or later; with this pick, I’m counting on sooner. Stella’s got misgivings about picking the Jags – this is a team led by Blake Bortles under center – but she figured that if they give 30 carries to Leonard Fournette, they’ll have the juice to stay with Tennessee.

And since the Vikings saved me from a deeper hole in the Monday night game, I’m calling for them to beat the Steelers. I liked what I saw from Sam Bradford and company; this Minnesota team is talented enough to surprise some teams this year – and the Steelers will be one of them. Stella's not buying it; she feels like Pittsburgh’s a different team on their home turf. She's also thinking that this is the week that Le’Veon Bell’s motor really gets going. She likes Pittsburgh in this one.

She’s also taking the road team in the Washington/LA Rams tilt. She thinks that the struggles of Kirk Cousins are largely a fluke and that the Rams D isn’t going to be able to shut that offense down. I, on the other hand, think that we’re watching the closing of Washington’s window. And I liked what Jared Goff showed last week. The Rams aren’t a playoff-caliber team yet, but they’re good enough to take down this scuffling Washington squad.

Finally, I’ve got the Falcons winning on the road against the Packers. Atlanta’s performance was uneven last week, but they’ve got too much talent to struggle like that again. Look for a big game from quarterback Matt Ryan. Stella agrees that the Falcons will put up big numbers, but she thinks that the Packers will put up bigger ones. She’s a big fan of Green Bay here and thinks that they’ll perform more than well enough to pull out a road win.

There we have it. Here’s hoping that I can defeat her this week and rub it in her adorable little doggie face.
