Why Wendy’s is winning
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - Burger King says three workers were fired after a photo posted online appeared to show an employee stepping on lettuce in bins at a northeast Ohio restaurant.
The hamburger chain’s statements to Ohio news outlets didn’t directly confirm reports that the picture was taken at a restaurant in the Cleveland suburb of Mayfield Heights.
Burger King Corp. says the franchisee that runs the independently operated restaurant quickly investigated the matter, and three employees were terminated.
The company says it won’t tolerate such violations of its strict procedures for safely handling food.
It didn’t comment on the circumstances in which the photo was taken. News outlets say the picture was posted on the free-for-all website 4chan.org, and GPS data embedded in the photo led to the restaurant.
Burger King Corp. is a unit of Burger King Worldwide Inc.

Turtles all the way down
SUMMERVILLE, Ga. - More than 1,500 turtles have made a slow-speed escape from their farm in the U.S.
Turtle farmer David Driver tells sheriff’s officials he suspects vandals are to blame for tearing down fences around his turtle ponds.
Authorities say that allowed the turtles make a beeline to nearby ponds and creeks.
Driver tells The Chattanooga Times Free Press newspaper that about 1,600 of the 2,200 turtles escaped. He says his business involves selling some turtles to pet-growing operations and others to China.
Sheriff’s officials are continuing to search for the escapees.

Ah, there’s the rub (down)
SANTA ANA, Calif. - A Mission Viejo man has been sentenced for impersonating a police officer to demand a rubdown and $200 at a massage parlor.
Orange County prosecutors say 48-year-old Edward Justin LaPorte was sentenced Wednesday to six months in prison and probation.
Prosecutors say LaPorte is a former police officer from Illinois who was wearing a badge when he entered the Golden Spa massage parlor in Lake Forest on Jan. 31. He told the manager he was investigating a complaint.
Prosecutors say he then complained of back pain, and a masseuse gave him a back rub before LaPorte asked for a frontal massage, which was refused.
The manager called city officials, who sent a real inspector who confronted LaPorte. LaPorte fled, but not before his license plate number was recorded.
TME – On a related note, the guy probably isn’t a Federal Bikini Inspector either. No matter what his T-shirt says.
This week in poor decisions
DYERSBURG, Tenn. - A Dyersburg man who called police and said a woman stole $40 dollars from him is headed to court as a criminal defendant.
The State Gazette reported the 62-year-old man, who is not identified, called police on July 5, saying he paid a woman for sex at a street corner and she ran away with his money. He said he wanted what he paid for or wanted his money back.
Police found the woman, who said she told the man she could buy drugs with the money. She says she gave it to someone else who ran away with it.
Officers cited both _ her for prostitution and him for patronizing a prostitute. They’re due in court July 20.

A Merry Man indeed
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A naked man with a bow and arrows has been taken into custody after a brief standoff with Kansas City police.
The Kansas City Star reports police responded Monday night to a report that a naked man was knocking on a neighbor’s door.
When police arrived, the man went inside a house and refused to come out, but then shot an arrow out of a window toward the area where the officers were hiding.
Police called for backup and tactical officers surrounded the house for about an hour before the man came outside and was subdued with a Taser.
Police say the man was taken to a hospital for treatment.
