BANGOR – The Bangor area is alive with the arts this month as the city marks its third annual ARTober celebration of the region’s creative community.

Here’s a quick look at some of the many things that are going on during the coming week.

Skull Craft Night – Oct. 18 – 6-7:30 p.m.

Fork & Spoon, 76 Main St. - $24.95

A night of crafting hosted by the folks at Fork & Spoon. You’ll learn how to make a fun and spooky skull and make it all your own. And there will be snacks and drinks provided as well (there’s a slightly reduced ticket price for those who don’t want wine). Head on over for an artsy good time!

Paint and Sip with Sweets – Oct. 19 – 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Specialty Sweets, 31 Main St. - $30

Every want to try your hand at painting? Here’s your chance! And everything is better with a glass of something to sip and a fancy chocolate or two.

A Reading by Vi Khi Nao – Oct. 20 – 7 p.m.

Bangor Arts Exchange, 193 Exchange St. – Free

Bangor’s Norumbega Collective is presenting this reading by the acclaimed poet and fiction writer Vi Khi Nao in the gallery at the Bangor Arts Exchange. The award-winning author will be offering reading selection from her acclaimed body of work. In addition, there will be a Q&A session with the author following the reading. Books will also be for sale at the event.

Paraween X: SYZYGY – Oct. 21 – 7 p.m.

Lancaster Room, Hollywood Casino - $15-20

The Haus of Paradigm is the Bangor area’s preeminent belly dance troupe. This performance of SYZYGY marks the tenth edition of Paraween, the group’s annual Halloween celebration, and features much of what audiences have come to expect from the dancers. Doors for the event open at 6:30; advance tickets at $15, while day of cost is $20. It’s a chance to see one of the area’s most unique performance groups bring their art to life.

Halloween Special Effects Makeup Demo – Oct. 21/22 – noon both days

Maine Jewelry & Art, 100 Harlow St. – Free

Artist and jewelry designer Amanda Coburn will lead a free demonstration of assorted techniques and applications for special effects makeup on Oct. 21 from noon until 4 p.m. The next day, she’ll offer a paid workshop for people to engage in some more in-depth learning; the event runs from noon to 2 p.m. and the cost is $35 per person. It’ll be a great way to get ready for Halloween!

Masterworks Concert: Symphonie Fantastique – Oct. 22 – 3 p.m.

Collins Center for the Arts, University of Maine - $14-49

This piece opens the 122nd season for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. This program features all manner of macabre music – perfect for the spirit of the Halloween season – as well as the talents of guest pianist William Wolfram. The BSO is one of the artistic cornerstones of the Bangor area, so it only stands to reason that they would be a big part of the celebration of ARTober. Head up to the CCA to hear some spooky tunes rendered forth by an immensely gifted group of musicians.

BrainyArt – Trivia at the Museum – Oct. 24 – 5:30-7:30 p.m.

University of Maine Museum of Art, 40 Harlow St. - $5

This marks the kickoff of BrainyArt’s second year. This ongoing trivia event is a fun offering from UMMA, allowing people to test their knowledge in areas from all over the artistic spectrum. In addition to the team trivia portion of the proceedings – which offers a cash prize to the winner - there’s also an individual creative challenge that carries with it an alternative prize. It’s an ARTober battle of wits!
