All the world’s a stage - Local audition opportunities abound

Have you ever wanted to tread the boards? Do you have a desire to take to the stage? Are you on the lookout for an opportunity to perform?

Well then – you’re in luck.

A number of companies are on the lookout for talented actors and actresses to take part in their upcoming productions. Some are searching for performers to take part in summer shows, while others are seeking cast members for productions farther down the road.

All in all, there are a LOT of opportunities out there. Here’s a quick breakdown of some of them:

Summer Shows

Shakespeare Under the Stars – “The Merry Wives of Windsor”

Ten Bucks Theatre Company has announced auditions for its summer 2017 Shakespeare offering. This year, they’ll be doing a comedy – “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” The production will be directed by Julie Arnold Lisnet.

Auditions will be held on April 29 and 30 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Community of Christ Church, located at 128 Pierce Rd. in Brewer. Monologues are welcome, but not necessary – sides from the script will be available for readings. Rehearsals will begin June 5; the schedule is generally 6-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.

Some Theatre Company – “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

Some Theatre Company will be making its first foray into summer Shakespeare in 2017 with their production of the beloved comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The production will be directed by Jon Ferreira.

Auditions will be held on May 7 from 2 – 5 p.m. and May 8 from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Keith Anderson Community House in Orono. Cold readings from the script will be provided – there is no need to prepare a monologue. Rehearsals will take place on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays at the Keith Anderson Community House.

True North Theatre – “Becky’s New Car”

True North Theatre is a new kid on the block in the local theatrical scene, but their debut show promises to be an interesting one. Their inaugural production – directed by Angela Bonacasa – is the Steven Dietz comedy “Becky’s New Car.”

Auditions will be held April 30 from 1 – 3 p.m. and May 1 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Church of Universal Fellowship, located at 82 Main St. in Orono. Audition materials will be readings from the script. Rehearsals will be scheduled to begin in early May and take place approximately 3-4 times a week.

Performance dates are as follows: June 16-18 and 23-25 at the Pavilion Theatre on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono. Future Opportunities

Penobscot Theatre Company – 2017-2018 Season Open Call

Penobscot Theatre Company has announced an open casting call looking to fill roles in five shows in their upcoming season.

Auditions will be held on May 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Various roles are available in five shows; they are as follows:

“Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” music by Alan Mencken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, book by Linda Woolverton) – runs Dec. 7–30.

“Escanaba in da Moonlight,” by Jeff Daniels – runs Feb. 1-18.

“Ugly Lies the Bone,” by Lindsey Ferrentino – runs March 15-April 1.

“The Spitfire Grill,” music and book by James Valcq, lyrics and book by Fred Alley – runs April 26-May 13.

Surprise Seventh Show (TBA) – runs June 14-July 8.

Auditions will be scheduled in five-minute slots. Interested parties must send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with the subject line “Audition Request.” Included in the body of the email should be the name and phone number of the person wishing to audition and an indication of whether he or she will sing. AEA and non-AEA actors alike are encouraged to audition; it should be noted that there are no roles available for youths under the age of 15 and children will not be seen at this time.

Auditioners should prepare a two-minute contemporary monologue (this should be memorized) and bring a headshot and resume stapled together. Vocalists should also be prepared to sing 16 bars of a song of their choosing; an accompanist will be provided, but vocalists must bring sheet music. Also, an additional monologue or song may be requested, so participants should prepare accordingly.

Callbacks will take place over the course of the summer.

Farther Afield

Theater at Monmouth – “Peter & the Starcatcher”

Theater at Monmouth will be holding non-equity auditions for their fall production of “Peter & the Starcatcher” by Rick Elice and based on the book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. The show will be directed by TAM producing artistic director Dawn McAndrews.

Auditions for the production will take place on April 24 from 3 – 7 p.m. at TAM’s Rehearsal Studio located at 775 Main St. in Monmouth.
