If you are curious about other cultures, then you might want to stop by the Bangor Public Library this winter. River City Cinema is partnering with the library for the Inaugural Global Lens Film Series. Friday, Jan. 24 will see the showing of the first film, the 2012 Chairman's Choice, 'Stolen Life.'

The director of Marketing and Development at the Bangor Public Library, Lisa Frazell, said that the Chinese film is about a young woman who goes to live with her grandmother as a teenager.

'It shows that behavior is global, and not cultural,' Frazell says, 'You can see that as [the film] goes through some of the twists and turns of her life.'

The showing will begin at 6 p.m. Popcorn and other refreshments will be served, and a short discussion period will follow the film. The after-hours event will take place in the lecture hall on the third floor.

According to the library's website, more films are lined up for the months ahead. Craft, a Brazilian film about an underemployed actress, will be shown on Feb. 28. March 28, is the date of the final film in the series. 'Gray Matter' from Rwanda will show on that day. 'Gray Matter' is described on the website as a film within a film, as the protagonist is a film maker. All films shown in the series will have English subtitles.

Frazell says that she hopes the event will bring different ideas and audiences to the library. She says that anyone who is interested in foreign films or cultures should come to the event.

'We're hoping a good amount of people with an open mind come,' says Frazell. She hopes the event becomes a yearly one, given the length of Maine winters.

All of the showings are free and open to the public. For more information on the event, visit the library's website at www.bpl.lib.me.us.
