BANGOR – The Rotary Club of Bangor will celebrate 100 years of “Service Above Self” at their centennial celebration on Oct. 13 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The public is invited to attend the event, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. and feature local entertainment and refreshments.

“I invite everyone to come learn more about the people and the actions that have been accomplished these last one hundred years,” said Bev Uhlenhake, club president. “The history of this club and its past and current members inspire each and every one of us to do good in the world.”

The Centennial Celebration will feature the RetroRockerz, a Bangor group that will kick off the event with music from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. The Rotary Club of Bangor will also provide guests with signature drinks, including the Festbier,a marzen-style beer brewed as part of Mason’s Oktoberfest; five percent of the proceeds will go toward Bangor Rotary’s centennial legacy project, which will be focused on the riverfront.

The theme of the reception area will be the Polio Plus Project, Rotary International’s signature program. Through this project, Rotary and its partners have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide. The area will feature historical exhibits, photos, and plenty of the Polio Plus Project’s signature color, purple.

At 6:30 p.m. the dinner experience will begin. Dinner will be catered by the Cross Insurance Center and feature three buffets, each with a theme associated with the Rotary Club of Bangor’s philanthropic community events, including the Festival of Lights Parade, Music Off Broadway, and the Club’s international service projects.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Ann Lee Hussey, a polio survivor, resident of South Berwick, Maine and Rotary Club member who received the Rotary’s highest honor for individual Rotarians, the Service Above Self award. Over the past several years Ann Lee has actively participated in 28 volunteer NID (National Immunization Day) teams organizing and leading the last 24 teams herself, choosing to take those NIDs to places that do not often see westerners – Chad, Mali, Bangladesh, Niger, Nigeria, and Madagascar – where the need is greatest. Ann Lee has put a face on the subject of polio eradication, winning hearts and minds and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process. Ann Lee has been honored as a White House Champion of Change and by the World Bank as a Woman of Action.

“We are so fortunate to have Ann Lee Hussey join our celebration,” said Scott Boucher, club member and former Rotary District 7790 Polio Plus Chair. “She is a recognized world leader in the fight for polio eradication. She is a survivor of the disease and a true ambassador on the front lines leading vaccination trips across the world.”

Sen. Susan Collins will also be in attendance and speak as a member of the club.

The event will conclude with an afterparty featuring more music by the RetroRockerz. The Centennial Celebration is sponsored by Epstein Commercial Real Estate, Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications, WVII ABC 7 and Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.

Tickets for the event will cost $75 per person or $1,000 for a table. Those interested in purchasing tickets for the event can visit goo.gl/Fb3ez8or visit Rotary Club of Bangor meetings on Tuesdays at noon at the Masonic Center on Union Street in Bangor.
