BANGOR - Coming together to have a beer is how many around the world celebrate special occasions. The 2018 Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner – set to take place on Jan. 10 - will be no exception this year … with a twist. Or a pop-top.

Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company, in partnership with Buoy Local, will attempt to break the world record for number of drinking cans simultaneously opened at one time.

The record, currently standing at 1,149, was set in Japan in 2016. As a way for Geaghan's to celebrate their move from packaging their beer in bottles to cans earlier this year, they thought incorporating the record break attempt into the largest sit-down dinner north of Boston would be a fun and unique way to celebrate their change in packaging.

“We have always enjoyed the Annual Awards Dinner and what it signifies to the community. We just thought this would be a great way to mark our change and involve the community in a way that brings us all together,” said, Andrew Geaghan, owner/head brewer Geaghan Brothers Brewing Co. “Don't worry, we have been practicing.”

“There are several strict guidelines to have beer involved with any event, but especially with an event of this magnitude,” said Lisa Sturgeon, communications manager, Geaghan Brothers Brewing. “We have worked with the State of Maine's Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations, as well as the great staff at the Cross Insurance Center to make sure that this was even a possibility before applying for the record attempt. Now, that is done, we are focusing on the guidelines put forth by Guinness World Records.”

For those who do not drink beer, or are under the age of 21 years old, there will be seltzer water donated by Maine Distributors so everyone can participate. The dinner regularly has over 1,000 attendees, plus close to 100 volunteers from Husson University and Cross Insurance staff who will be able to open a can for the event.

“The idea of everyone at our annual awards dinner opening a can at the same time to break a world record seems fitting as we celebrate working together on a daily basis to make this region the best place to live, learn, work and play,” said Deb Neuman, President of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce. “Thanks to the Geaghans family for all they have contributed to our community over the years and for adding this exciting event to our annual dinner. Together we CAN do it!”

To participate in the record attempt, and attend the annual dinner, tickets can be purchased through the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce www.bangorregion.com. This event sells out every year, and with the list of honorees and the record attempt this year will be no exception.
