Baby on board

One of entertainment's biggest power couples has announced an impending addition to their superfamous family.

That's right: Kim Kardashian is going to have Kanye West's baby. He made the announcement from the stage at a concert in Atlantic City, telling the world that Kim was pregnant. She is reportedly about 12 weeks along.

The realities of marriage This Is 40'

Apatow's latest light on story

We've all got to grow up sometime.

That's the primary message behind writer/director Judd Apatow's latest offering, both in terms of the story itself and Apatow's own changes as a filmmaker. Growing up is the foundation of 'This Is 40,' billed as a 'sort-of sequel' to 2007's 'Knocked Up.'

Pete (Paul Rudd; 'Wanderlust') and Debbie (Leslie Mann; 'The Change-Up') are a married couple attempting to muddle through the realities of their life together as both approach 40. Pete runs a struggling independent record label that desperately needs a hit, while Debbie's boutique clothing store is losing money under mysterious circumstances.

Film Favorites: 12 for 2012

A look back at some of this year's highlights

This is not intended to be a traditional 'Best Of' list. Nor is it intended to be comprehensive truthfully, one or more as-yet-unseen late-year releases might well bound their way up the ladder (I'm looking at you 'Django Unchained' and 'Zero Dark Thirty' and yes, you too 'Les Miserables.')

No, this list is instead a look back at some of my favorite films of the year. Are there 'better' films out there that didn't make the cut? Absolutely. These are just a handful of films some great, some less so that I really enjoyed in 2012.

What went wrong: terrible movies of 2012

No 'year in review' is complete without addressing the worst of the worst. While Hollywood certainly churned out some bad movies in 2012 more than could possibly fit on this sort of list there's a special kind of bad that needs to be brought to the forefront.

Here are some films (and one category of films) released in the past year that I have deemed worthy of scorn and derision. It's all a matter of taste; there are more 'deserving' films than there are available spaces. Still, I think you'll agree these movies are terrible.

A few of 2012's best reads

People read for different reasons. Some read to learn, while others read to escape; some read to be challenged, others simply to be entertained.

I read for all of these reasons.

So there's a little bit of everything in this list of my 2012 favorites; if nothing else, I feel confident in saying that readers from across the spectrum will find something to like here.

A year of poor prognostication

The Edge's own Yestradamus reviews 2012's sporting picks

Those who read the Maine Edge with regularity know two things when it comes to my relationship to sports I love them and I'm really terrible at predicting what's going to happen. I truly am a sporting Yestradamus. As in the opposite of Nostradamus.

For our Year in Review, I thought it might be fun to take a look back and own up to a year's worth of unfortunate predictions. While there are plenty of pundits out there who will toss out predictions willy-nilly, not all of them will take ownership of those picks when they turn out to be wrong. I am ready for the reckoning.

Boston's burning hot stove

A look at some Red Sox signings

After an abysmal 2012 season that saw the Boston Red Sox finish with 93 losses their worst season in 40 years and engage in perhaps the biggest salary dump trade in the game's history, the team finds itself in a rebuilding phase.

They have made some free agent signings aimed at altering the franchise's trajectory and halting the downward spiral they've been in for the past couple of years. Here's one fan's take on those big signings as well as one former franchise fixture's return to the division on the other side of its most heated rivalry.

Baseball's big offseason moves

MLB's biggest free agent signings and trades

Major League Baseball's offseason is often filled with intrigue and surprises as assorted free agents sign with new teams and blockbuster trades are made. The winter of 2012 has been no different thus far as some of the game's big names and elite talents will be doing their thing from new zip codes come April.

This year's two biggest free agents were an interesting pair; two immense talents who have each dealt with their fair share of adversity both on and off the field.

First installment of trilogy strong in spots, but overlong

Certain films, by their very nature, are doomed to be disappointments.

Director Peter Jackson is once again taking audiences on a lengthy journey through the lands of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth. The director of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy has brought us the eagerly-anticipated first installment of 'The Hobbit.' This film, subtitled 'An Unexpected Journey,' leads off a brand new trilogy based on Tolkien's novel.

We Got To Play Baseball' a solid hit

Collection offers 60 stories from behind baseball's scenes

Of all the major American professional sports, perhaps none carries as much reverence and respect for its own history as baseball. It is a game built generationally, each era constructed on the foundation of the one that came before it.

It is also a game that comes to life not just through its numbers, but through its stories. That's what makes a book like 'We Got To Play Baseball' (Strategic Book Publishing, $15.95) such an engaging read.
