Twitter tribulations

Believe it or not, a good deal of the sayings and doings for which celebrities get slammed completely lack malicious intent. Don't get me wrong it doesn't make these things less stupid. They are very stupid. Still, most of the time, no harm is meant.

The recent controversy surrounding Gwyneth Paltrow and her Twitter feed is a perfect example.

Paltrow was in attendance at a Jay-Z/Kanye West 'Watch The Throne' show in Paris recently. She clearly was feeling it when she took to the interwebs to send this tweet: 'N----s in Paris for real.' She paired that tweet with a picture of the duo on stage.

Men in Black 3' surprisingly strong

Will Smith's screen return has humor and heart

When I initially heard about 'Men in Black 3,' I didn't think much of it. It's summertime; of course there are going to be blockbuster sci-fi/action sequels. That's just how it works. But when I sat down to actually watch the movie, something obvious only just then occurred to me.

I have never reviewed a Will Smith movie.

His last film was 'Seven Pounds,' released in 2008 (well before my published film criticism began). Despite the fact that Will Smith is (I think) still considered one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, he hasn't opened a movie in four years.

Dear Diary - This movie is terrible

Chernobyl Diaries' bland, boring and uninspired

You know you're in for a long one when you're 15 minutes into a horror movie and you realize that you're already rooting for the heroes to die.

That, alas, was my lot upon watching 'Chernobyl Diaries.' The film's pedigree has been pushed pretty hard writer Oren Peli was the brains behind the 'Paranormal Activity' films but that comparison only serves to remind us how thin and gimmicky the 'PA' films turned out to be. Add to that the fact that the film was never screened for critics and you get a film that the studio is obviously less than enthused about.

The lack of enthusiasm is warranted.

Modern magic Cursed'

Urban fantasy sequel continues adventure

I'm a relative latecomer to the urban fantasy genre, but it has turned out to be a nice fit. It suits me much better than the standard sword-and-sorcery boilerplate creating a magically-based analogue of our own modern world is so much more engaging. It's the realm of magic explored with 21st century attitudes.

So many of these novels are generated as part of a longer series of books; it's always a crapshoot to pick up Book One. If you're like me, it's almost impossible to walk away from a longer ongoing story, so you have to hope that you're not investing in something that will ultimately disappoint.

Benedict Jacka is currently two-for-two.

Badass Bieber

There's something irritatingly wholesome about Justin Bieber. Even when he tries to be tough by association hanging out with boxers like Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson for example it never quite rings true. He's all goofy grin and haircut heck, that innocence is one of the main reasons he's achieved so much success. Turns out Bieber might be a harder case than we gave him credit for.

A California photographer is alleging that the Biebs beat him up.

According to the report, Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez were leaving a Calabasas mall on Sunday when the altercation took place. According to the paparazzo, he was simply trying to take a picture of Bieber and Gomez as they were leaving. Bieber took umbrage and there was apparently a scuffle before the tween idols drove off. The photog claimed injury; an ambulance was called and he was taken to the hospital, examined and released.

'Share' the love

There's no disputing that whiling away a couple of hours browsing the offerings at your local farmer's market is a pleasant way to pass the time. These markets offer all kinds of wonderful locally-grown organic vegetable options for your dining pleasure.

But maybe the farmer's market isn't an occasional thing for you. Maybe you and your family are devoted to the idea of not only eating locally grown food, but also playing a part in the actual farming process.

That's where farm shares come in.

'Dark Shadows' an uninspiring effort

It's always sad when a long-standing cinematic collaboration begins to run out of steam. It happens to the best of them, whether it springs from creative differences, personal issues or just overstaying their welcomes.
I hate to say it, but I think the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp pairing may have reached its sell-by date. The duo's latest collaboration is 'Dark Shadows,' based on the gothic soap opera that originally aired in the late 1960s.
Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work.

Believe the hype The Avengers'

'The Avengers' is the culmination of a years-long buildup spread across multiple films. It is an incredibly ambitious attempt at world-building the likes of which the summer blockbuster genre has never seen before. It is an effort at creating not just a comic book movie, but a comic book universe. The hype has been enormous and the anticipation even greater. So it's here.
And it's outstanding.

'The Five Year Engagement' almost great

Ongoing Hollywood relationships are relatively rare, so it's interesting when a creative team reunites for another project. It's of particular interest when the previous undertaking was a strong one.
Judd Apatow, Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel came together in a big way with 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall,' a huge success both critically and commercially. So when 'The Five Year Engagement' came along getting the band back together, so to speak the level of anticipation was high. But sometimes these collaborations aren't meant to be recreated, and when they're forced, they usually wind up falling flat.

Quoth The Raven' total bore

Sometimes, you just know. Maybe you're watching a trailer or reading a preview; you're learning about an upcoming movie for the first time. Just like that, an epiphany about this movie strikes.
It is going to be terrible.
